This is a biological reserve located on the west coast of Colombia, in the department of Chocó. Our mission is to preserve an area of primary tropical rainforest and protect all the biodiversity within it.

The reserve offers a national and international volunteering program, in which those who are interested in tropical rainforest conservation, helping vulnerable communities, or getting out of the routine, can spend time here, whilst there, they can enjoy a unique experience helping in further investigations and the maintenance of the biological station.

*Please contact us at least two weeks before your arrival!

The volunteer program provides a comforting experience to those who have an adventurous spirit and enjoy tropical rainforest with its diversity of flora and fauna, people interested in helping in the preservation of natural habitats, wanting to give a hand in the activities that make the biological station stay in good shape, sharing experiences and knowledge while contributing to the project’s growth plan.

Volunteers are required to work 5 hours a day in maintenance labors at the station, ecological paths construction and organic garden care. Besides, volunteers can be part of the teams that develop biological and ecological investigations at the reserve.

The goal of the volunteering project is to acquire new and unique experiences by having the opportunity of sharing with native and indigenous communities that live by the reserve, observing local and migratory species and learning about a self-sustainable way of life.

El Amargal receives no funding from any organizations. The reserve depends completely on the contributions given by the Volunteer Program, Investigation, and Ecotourism.

The distance between the reserve and the nearest village makes it difficult to get what is needed for the maintenance and support of the station and those who are permanently giving a hand in the forest conservation. The rates applied to volunteers pay for the cost of the materials required for the development of the station, which is constantly being renewed due to climate and humidity conditions.

For that reason, we ask volunteers to give a $30.000 COP (approx. $10 USD) contribution per night.

*Transportation cost from Nuquí to El Amargal may vary according to the time of the year (around $240.000 COP or $80 USD roundtrip). We work with local captains, please ask about their current rates!

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions! We will be glad to answer them all! +57 3152224053
