House c 1500. The work involves clearing pine trees from a mixed old and then spoilt by commercial pine planting, and thinking what to do with the smallish craggy valleyly of then less densely forested plot. An aerial wonderland is proof that conception far outpaces ability.

The gardener Hethrington the goat, one resident and three wannabe cats, comprise the cuddly megafauna (altho Hethrington, in common with his kind, might be more appreciated with a heavy cold).

Quiet was the reason for coming here and it fits the bill. The adjoining fields attract the occasional tractor and too few butterflies but there are many here.

A local bar, a bike ride away, offers wireless internet (there is a satellite internet connection available in the house), music some fridays, and a limited menu sometimes. The supermarket and small town can be achieved by the van, and the van can pick up two per trip from a local town, Guingamp, Brest, or the Plymouth ferry at Roscoff.

Accommodation is in an annex attached to but separate from the main house. I think this is the bit that goes back to 1500. There are two double bedrooms, on top and first floor, separated by stairs and a curtain. Single mattresses can be put to the floor.

Shepherds pie or red bean stew are the back-up meals but a variety can be generated with will.

Pictures show the march up valley of the pines. The engulfment and destruction of a good tree by the nefarious pine. The first cut is the .. Hethrington interviewing unsuccessful applicant for under-gardener. The annex bathed in shadow of a good tree. I know pines are not all bad. But all that grows under them is ivy and bramble, the ivy crawls up all trees and, if the over-towering pine doesn't get them the ivy will. And a growing forest is better than a mature forest for CO2 locking. Win win.

Pix 6 shows autumn oak with very few leaves, bedraggled branches reaching toward viewer and sun, under which hazel greenery dropping and drooping by the ground and then towering over all, the dark green predator of evergreen ivy. An ivy farm to slow the carbon economy?
