Hi Helpers of the world. WE ARE SEEKING ENQUIRIES FROM LONGER TERM HELPERS FROM THE BEGINNING OF AUGUST 2018 ONWARDS -PREFERABLY A COUPLE OR TWO FRIENDS WHO CAN SHARE ACCOMMODATION BUT WE ARE ALSO BE ABLE CONSIDER SINGLE HELPERS DURING THE JULY AND AUGUSTSUMMER - to join the Lacey's community.

INISHBOFIN is a stunningly beautiful island off Ireland's west coast and is designated a place of outstanding natural beauty, a special area of conservation and is known for its Irish music tradition.

It has a twice daily Spring and thrice daily Summer ferry service connecting it to the mainland, a resident public health nurse, a national school, a shop, a community centre, a library and a pub/B&B, all open for Winter. And from Easter each year, its hotels begin to open as the seasons change, the days get longer, the garden springs to life and the visitor numbers increase.
Lacey's Farm is a project in development and those who volunteer will contribute to the development of a centre whose activities will include being an educational resource focused on sustainable living and renewable technologies; food production in harmony with nature; permaculture; and cultural exchange.
Since commencing the project in 2011, we (Anthony and Julia) have transformed Lacey's Farm and have created beautiful and productive visitor gardens there and have supplied the tourist market and some local hotels with fresh organically grown garden produce. Although we are not registered as organic, we only use natural methods of vegetable production with no pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilizers.
We have had our most successful two years of development so far in 2017/18 with a string of energetic and enthusiastic helpers who came to stay on the farm.
Now we want to lay down the foundations for future advancement of the project which may involve basic construction and garden maintenance - depending on the skill-set of any helpers.
For longer term helpers, we are offering accommodation in a beautiful caravan during the Summer months and in the 100 year old farm house from Autumn onwards, the garden's bounty and a small stipend to help with your expenses for 25 hours per week spent engaged in Farm work.
Shorter term Summer helpers will stay in a beautiful four roomed tent on mattresses.
Lacey's farm is a spectacular 2.5 hectare holding on the gently south sloping land overlooking the harbour of the beautiful island of Inishbofin off the Connemara coast – one of the most Westerly places in Europe.
We are developing a beautiful market garden/visitor attraction catering mainly for summer tourists but also for locals. We have also developed a series of products - jams, chutneys, ketchups, pestos, hummus, cordials, ice creams and sorbets - from the garden produce which we sell from the farm and the local market. Enquiries from Helpers who love to cook and experiment with super fresh garden produce would be most welcome.
Our long-term aim is to develop a food hub, a permaculture and sustainability centre and an artisan food shop– for which we already have planning permission -and the further development of our visitor gardens
Much has already been achieved in previous years on the garden front and Summer helpers will assist with the maintainence of the gardens and polytunnels, undertaking crop planting and harvesting, weeding and whatever else needs doing.
Since 2011, we have been developing the gardens and accommodation. The lands now include a vegetable garden, a root crop field, two polytunnels, a walled garden and a herb garden (planned with seating and also having beautiful views of the comings and goings of the island's harbour). The vegetable garden has been in operation since 2012 and the root crop field since 2014. The other elements were commissioned during 2017 and the continuing upgrading of these are our development projects for 2018.
We have also constructed a new kitchen to process the garden bounty and a shower/toilet/wash house for use by helpers and visitors alike. We invite enquiries for helpers with appropriate skill sets from now onwards.
Anthony grows the vegetables and Julia has developed some fantastic products made from the garden bounty. We sell these items and our fresh veg (plus some stunning Italian organic olive oil and fairtrade/organic coffee) from the farm and at the weekly Summer market.
We are looking for practical helpers with good skills for working in the garden doing house maintenance and creative cooks.
Ideal candidates will be focused and organized
and able to work as part of a team or be self starters. They will be enthusiastic learners, be able to turn their hand to most jobs and will have a love of nature and the outdoors. Helpers will have the opportunity to learn many new skills and immerse themselves in island culture. References from some sources are preferred but we may accept non-helpx references if they are appropriate.
Inishbofin is a spectacularly beautiful island with a very strong Irish music tradition, several national loop walks, three sandy beaches, many rugged cliffs, a long history and much archaeology. It has a shop (100m from the farm), a post office, a pub, three hotels (open from Easter to September), three cafés (one in a double decker London bus), a beautiful hostel and an excellent broadband service.
There is a large community centre within 100m of Lacey's Farm where there is a library, an internet cafe, a large hall (where indoor soccer, basketball or badminton can be played), a creche and exhibition space. The farm is located in a stunning position overlooking the island's harbour.
