San Juan Hermitage is set in 9 hectares of olives and virgin forest in the very heart of the Sierra de Las Nieves within the walls of The Barefoot Carmalite Monks Convent. The hermitage is 10 km from the closest village El Burgo and a further 30 minutes by car to Ronda. It is an ideal retreat to explore the mountains and have space and time for reflection. Yoga and meditation retreats have been hosted here since 2003.
All water is spring water and electric is solar.
The farm has been totally organic since 2003. Help with picking and pruning almonds and olives is needed from December to February.

The original 400 year old hermitage has been restored with the addition of a huge flat roof with superb all-round views. Adobe build, straw bail and wooden huts are additional builds.

SET UP in May and June. Require 4 strong persons. Help is needed to maintain and get ready for the summer to be able to receive friends and guests. Assistance is needed in tidying the land, painting, erecting Bell Tents, gardening, repairs to eco builds and generally trying to make San Juan Hermitage as beautiful as the surroundings! Self sufficiency is necessary to run this isolated community and hence a range of skills and projects are practiced, ie solar electrics, water management, gardening, eco building, car maintenance, carpentry, cookery, tree surgery and more.
Anyone with a love a cooking hugely welcome. Eating all together on a stunning shaded terrace is a great social occasion. Relaxing and boosting energy. Work hard and relax with style! The days rhythm runs around eating at set times exactly like the Andalucían’s. Typical Day Schedule

YOGA RETREAT SEASON . 4 Helpers Required Per Retreat.
June to October 6th (July and August Family Retreats)
Help is needed with guests, catering, hospitality and general tidying. Social outgoing people needed. Children Assistance needed in July and August running and creating fun activities for our 4 Family Yoga retreats. Our son Leo is 5 years old and is active and social, play mates needed. Adult only retreats are last week June and September.
We often require a Children's Activity Leader, please inquire if suited.
There is a week off between each retreat. All retreats run Saturday to Saturday. Volunteers usually 4, come on a Thursday ready for the retreat start on a Saturday. If staying for 1 retreat depart after the retreat ends the following Saturday. During the retreat helping is busy as we have up to 16 guests. We prefer helpers to come for 2 retreats (3 weeks time in all) which gives time between retreats to relax, go slow and enjoy the Sierra de Las Nieves. Helpers can use the retreat center as their base (we provide accommodation and facilities, helpers provide own food) exploring the nature reserve or venturing further afield. It is a beautiful 90 minute walk to the local village of El Burgo. Only responsibility is to keep place clean and tidy and cook for themselves. Sometimes guests are staying. Thursdays team re unites and begins to prepare for the guests arrival on the Saturday.

Helpers stay in Bell Tents which have flooring, bed bases , mattress’s and all bedding. Large enough for 2 if required.
Yoga practice is an essential part of the founders lifestyle. The retreat is an ideal place for spiritual practice with many ideal spots to practice yoga or meditation.
A willingness and happiness to be outdoors and apply one self is useful. Good spirit is more essential than knowledge. Good team workers are needed.
