This is a small owner-built BBH backpackers lodge on the north side of Hokianga Harbour. We have accommodation and camp sites for a maximum of 20 guests per night.

You can travel here by car, motorbike or bicycle and you can get here by bus once or twice a week. Contact us for information about the bus service.

We have some environmental weeds which we need help to eradicate. This work can be quite repetitive but some people find it relaxing or even meditative. Also you'll be outside in nature and helping to protect a large piece of mature regenerating native bush. Come and work amongst the piwakawaka (fantail birds) and help the New Zealand bush.
Sometimes there are other jobs like window cleaning, raking leaves or moving firewood.

Pauline and Phil Evans have been running the hostel as a small family business for 25 years. They moved to New Zealand from Australia in 1981. Their son, daughter-in-law & grand-son now help with the hostel.

Travellers and bike tourists stay at The Tree House while on their way to Waipoua Kauri Forest or Cape Reinga or Bay of Islands.

We ask for up to 2 hours help per person in exchange for each nights accommodation or 1 hours help per person in exchange for one nights camping(bring your own tent or small van). Minimum stay 2 nights, maximum stay about 1 week.

Food is not supplied but there is a good kitchen in the backpackers lodge where you can prepare your own meals. Pick up food at a big supermarket on your way to The Tree House or buy food at small grocery stores in the village of Rawene, which is not far from The Tree House.
