(Chestnut woodland, roundwood building, permaculture, medicinal herbs, natural building, food forest)

Our highest excitement and fascination is Life itself! We are passionate about food that is healing and alive. We are equally passionate about music. We work with many indigenous ways of healing & with medicinal plants, learning all about them & making tinctures, flower essences and other remedies and are planting many many more, for ourselves and the bees.
We live life from the heart, in gratitude and as a living meditation.

So far we are three hobbits here, Olly, Andí and our little rascal friend Babu. Our Shire is a woodland nestled in the hills of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park in central Portugal. This is quite a magical place that has been abandoned for decades and that we are now restoring to an abundant and self-sustaining food forest, using permaculture principles and a lot of Love! We are creating this for people to come and heal, become empowered and live their life again fully from the heart.

We are completely off-grid here – the sun (and soon the river) provides us with electricity, our delicious sweet tasting water comes straight from the mountains and our firewood, food and medicine increasingly from the forest. Although we are still far from being completely self-sufficient, this is our aim and inspiration for everything we do here. We have created a little plunge pool in the river - a dip in the ice cold mountain stream and you feel amazing!!

We have a lot of exciting projects in the planning, such as building a strawbale roundhouse, natural swimming pools, clay bread oven, roundwood structures, a beautiful compost toilet, etc etc!

To make this a wonderful and rewarding experience for all of us we welcome nature-loving, community-minded folk and people who are up for creating a warm and fun experience, and who aren't afraid to have a hands on experience!
You need to be enthusiastic, motivated and happy to give 100% of yourself and finish tasks with attention to detail.

We are looking for peeps who have at least some experience with chopping wood, natural building or basic carpentry, making veggie beds, planting trees/shrubs, or using tools such as axes, drills, brush cutters etc.

How You Can Help
We welcome people with specific skills and experience, such as simple carpentry, clay and/or lime works, permaculture, food preservation, land art etc etc.

We would like this to be a mutual learning experience where we can empower each other by sharing what we know!
And sometimes there are projects where skill or experience is not absolutely necessary but a problem-solving and down-to-earth practical DIY attitude what is needed. Together with openness, humour, enthusiasm and an ability to listen and work with an attention to detail, this counts for just as much as experience!

We always work as weather, project progress, materials, machines, power availability, inspiration, flow and necessity dictate, and we often work on several projects simultaneously, moving from one to another as conditions suggest. Flexibility and being in the flow are important here.

Accommodation is in either a caravan or tent (with mattress) - the set-up is basic but comfy!;-)
We will also provide nourishing, vegetarian meals with ingredients that are seasonal, local and organic wherever possible and prepared with attention and LOVE!
You are also welcome to join us for excursions, gatherings and workshops that are happening around here!

(Please note that we cannot provide you with health insurance.)

Our growing community in this area with peeps from all over the world means that there are frequent gatherings, drum circles, Red Tent womens circles, workshops, yoga classes, Mantra singing, QiGong classes etc etc etc!:-) There is also an increasing number of children here for those of you who travel with their kiddies.

This area here is magical, powerful and beautiful, sitting on granite and quartz with many neolithic sites around. It really invites one to go for a walk and explore, go swimming in the many creeks and rivers and to just sit and BE. The medieval village of Linhares da Beira is about 30 mins by foot (or 10 mins by car). There are loads of river beaches around and in summer we often just take the afternoon off and hang out there instead if it's too hot or we are just in the mood for a swim!:-)

- This is a strictly organic farm and there is not yet a greywater system installed. Water is sacred and we want to bring this awareness back. This means that you can only use purely natural and biodegradable soap, shampoo, toothpaste and anything else that eventually ends up in the soil and water. We are making our own wonderful olive oil soap and healing toothpowder and are happy to share it with you for a small donation if you cannot bring them with you. Please let us know in advance shall you wish to purchase some.

- For this same reason we need a full disclosure of any medications you're taking, especially birth control pills, antibiotics etc. as this seriously impacts the farm's soil and plant life.

- Life here goes with the flow, so an easy-going, flexible, humorous attitude is essential, as is the ability to work independently if circumstances and other workloads demand.

- PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN DRINKING BOTTLE, TOWEL, WORK CLOTHES, SUITABLE FOOTWEAR with a good sole (I.e. not flip flops or converse like shoes) AND TORCH! We provide work gloves of course, and a friendly family atmosphere to make you feel at home with us!

Our nearest local villages are Figueiró da Serra, Linhares da Beira and Carrapichana (which also has a bus stop served by Rede Expressos coach services). Other bus and train stations are Gouveia or Celorico da Beira.
