We have a really incredible small farm in the Blue Ridge mountains of southwest Virginia, 45 minutes south of Roanoke. The town of Floyd, in Floyd County, is known nationally as a quaint small town on the crooked trail, a bluegrass and folk music hot spot, with a really diverse and progressive artistic community along with a vibrant farming community set in an amazingly stunning rolling hills agricultural landscape. Floyd County is a unique mountain community known for its music, its natural beauty, its arts, and its diverse, caring people. Located atop the Blue Ridge Plateau in southwestern Virginia, Floyd County is a haven removed from the rush of urbanity, yet alive with the sounds, colors and textures of rural life. Incredible outdoor activities abound in this beautiful area: hiking, waterfalls, wildlife, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, and much much more.
Our 40 acre farm is on the top of a big hill/small mountain and is mainly wooded with a creek, springs, and a pond -- about 7 acres are cleared around our home. The farm is very diverse: apple trees, pear trees, blueberry bushes, heritage breed livestock: American guinea hogs, Icelandic and other breeds of chickens, variety of ducks, Narraganset turkeys, guinea fowl, rabbits, 3 dogs (1 is a livestock guardian working dog), and two barn cats. I grow a large garden too. There is a farm house which we live in and a cabin that we offer up to a couple looking to experience this amazing area. Living in the cabin is rent free in exchange for help on the farm, especially with the mowing and firewood. The small cabin is very quaint and private, back in the woods off the logging road, past the pond and the spring. The cabin has electricity, but no running water. There is a compost toilet/outhouse, and a water line has been pulled to the cabin, but not connected. I hope the folks who will live there will be handy and can connect that up. There is a small kitchenette area, a living area with a wood burning stove, and then a loft for sleeping. The help on the farm would likely take a couple of days a week, but not fulltime unless you would like to increase the growing here significantly, which I am open to. Because I donít need fulltime help, I am not offering pay, but instead offer living in the cabin in exchange for part-time work on the farm. With only needing part-time work on the farm, Iím not offering to fully feed folks, there are eggs and garden veges aplenty to supplement. Preference is for a 6 month to one year stay, but Iím open to shorter/seasonal also.
We require all applicants to send us 1. resume (emphasizing farm work though this is not necessarily a pre-requisite as attitude, integrity and work ethic are more important) and 2. cover letter (stating why you would like to come to Floyd and work/live on my farm) with 2 professional references included. We also require all applicants to do a Skype interview to assess if we are a good fit for each other.
