Hello and welcome to - the first stages of a life betterment project in Bali for people with disabilities and their families. I am an Australian mother of an eighteen year old special needs young adult with Intellectual "impairment" and Autism-like renegade features which in total makes my not-so-little girl a unique force to be reckoned with. With a huge affinity for music, rhythm, crazy dance and improv; squishing, peeling and tearing things...The aim of our existence is to create an environment where my daughter can have friends and be nurtured and encouraged to participate in activities that can help her develop skills she may need for the future in a social setting with other kids with disabilities and the general community.
My passion is learning and building with bamboo, recycled materials (mainly plastic trash but also recycled timbers) and making Earth-friendly and renewable technologies that are accessible and low-cost. We'd like to be able to expand our skills and share with others - local and international - and create quality experiences inclusive of special needs kids and adults... and ease the carer burden on families.
Our main focus at present is building a bamboo prototype tiny house earthship in the urban/rice field Seminyak/Denpasar area next door to Bali Street Kids Foundation. We are working with local Indonesian bamboo and wood carving craftsmen/builders - learning from them directly - and integrating our own knowledge (and experimentation) of natural building methods and preservation techniques for bamboo - with the hope that those who participate with us will go on to blaze the trail of natural building using bamboo, renewable technologies and recycled materials and sharing these with others. By definition, an Earthship is a building that is made from local indigenous materials, and produces it's own energy and food and recycles it's own waste... So this building will be an Earthship (thanks to Mike Reynolds for this concept www.earthship.com and the headline documentary Garbage Warrior see https://youtu.be/QEzbOMvrlIA) in that we intend to make a closed system that deals with it's own waste and generates energy for cooking and nutrients for food production.
Our basic bamboo design comes from Java and thanks to DeBu Crew and Jukka at Farmer's Yard (also listed here on Help X)- who we have been working in cahoots with, we have a design originally used as a rice barn - that's a simple, reproducible and potentially modular design for a bamboo house that's affordable and able to be shared with hopefully a lot of people in the tropics who are in need of ecological, efficient, pleasant, affordable and comfortable housing.
Our 5 Year Vision: We aim to create a village where bamboo houses are built to accommodate families with children with disabilities who come to join our Homestay program; where helpX participants are part of the community fabric with varied roles but generally helping to build/maintain dwellings, community farming and healthful living systems in our village homestay, and to assist carers and teacher aids through sharing their time and skills/ passion with children and young adults with special needs and their families.
In this village we invite creative artists, (performing/graphic/musician etc) to help enrich the lives of our kids with disabilities by assisting them to take part in daily group "theraplay" ("learning activities" disguised as everyday life). I've found my daughter learns and participates best with peers - having a bunch of kids around her - as well as with big kids (which is basically what you've got to Be to function in a Special World).
We offer have a Resident Artist program separately to HelpX which differs in that we work specifically with you in your chosen area to develop and hone your skills with bamboo or in a chosen area around "disabilities" to develop programs/expertise which can be carried forward as we'd love to see more people join their creativity and passion to spread more knowledge, awareness and support of Special worlds. More details are available on our website.
Our regular helping hours are Mon-Fri 10.30am to 3.30pm when we have a full program. We provide the main meal of the day (lunch). We make a shared dinner or take turns... and breakfast is up to you.
*** at the moment our helping schedule is 10am to 1pm and we are not providing meals ***
Early morning is a great time to go down to the beach with plenty of time before we start for a surf/breakfast etc. There is a great selection of local warnings, markets and international food restaurants close by (walking distance). Even a Buddhist temple with vegan restaurant which is super yummy... especially the Sirsak juice (Soursop)!
On Tuesday mornings we go to the Sunrise School for special needs kids and do gardening or other activities. Some afternoons we go and hand out with the kids next door at Bali Street Kids with Freyr. Saturday is our community day. You can help or take off for Saturday and Sunday. Starting in the morning we do trash collection and making bottle bricks. After lunch we host a bamboo craft workshop which you're welcome to join. Everyone chooses some area of the homestay to be responsible for... whether giving the floors a quick sweep/mop in the morning/last thing; wiping down kitchen benches, feeding fish and other animals, watering plants, washing plastic ready for stuffing bottle bricks, tending the compost....
If you are unable to do your physical contribution, we request you pay Rp. 50,000 per night.
Feel free to ask any questions and do by all means say what ways youd like to contribute and what you hope to gain or receive from your stay with us.the best way to contact us is to WhatsApp the phone number above in contact details +6281237906885

Accommodation is dorm-style in our Bamboo House (no eating or smoking in the upstairs - ants, rats and fires are no fun). The kitchen is fairly basic with gas stove and small fridge and pantry.
We mainly buy what we need on a daily basis from the market. We have a compost toilet with water/bumgun. Paper and Plastic are separated from recyclable plastics. Soft plastic waste is washed in used to stuff bottle bricks. Organic waste goes in the compost.
Be responsible for your own trash! If you buy plastic: dispose of it in a responsible way... ie. wash and put into an ecobrick. There is a dude who comes and collects harder plastics like drink bottles so they can be washed and thrown in the trash.
If you break/lose something - repair it or replace it. We have a check-in meeting once or twice a week to ensure a smooth workflow (Tuesday 2pm; Sunday 6pm) Always feel free to ask questions and don't forget: Be the Change you want to see !
Also, it's a good idea to have a padlock for your bag because Freyr sometimes likes to go exploring and if someone isn't watching her, will wreak havoc and mass destruction. She likes exploring people's bags to find mobile phones so she can watch youtube... however if she comes across cosmetics, she might just like to try some on... especially moisturiser, anything that looks like it might be moisturiser or sunscreen, and lipstick. So be warned lol. We can't lock everything all the time so it's just a precaution. We keep a small stash of padlocks so you can buy or borrow one if you don't have one.
