We are a non-profit organization based in Guatemala. IMAP was founded in 2000 by a group of local people concerned by the serious environmental, social and cultural problems affecting the nation. They established an ecological education center to promote permaculture techniques, local biodiversity conservation, production of organic food, and a seed bank that strives to reconstruct the Mayan seed heritage.

The centre develops the practical skills and awareness needed to ensure food sovereignty, community development and the preservation of biodiversity and ancestral knowledge.
Open to receive volunteers April, 2017. We maintain organic, sustainable crops for local consumption, run a renowned seed bank, and are sponsoring a local nutrition project based on native foods. We invite you to share our community near Lake Atitlan.

Through our volunteer program, you can offer a helping hand for the institute’s ongoing projects on-site and within the communities while learning and sharing experiences about permaculture. Generally, volunteers’ time is shared between daily activities geared toward maintenance and improvement of the permaculture centre, and the institute's ongoing projects.

On-site tasks include:

Maintenance and improvement of gardens, nurseries and gardens
Construction of new infrastructure, bio-construction and construction using recycled materials (buildings, solar showers, terraces, paths)
Sustainable technology projects (eg. solar ovens)
Documentation (inventory and labeling of plant species)
Seed bank support (germination tests, seed catalogue, packing of seeds for sale, selection and preparation of seeds)
