Help us to make this place green again!

Green. We want it to be green again! This is an experimental agroecological farm located within the semiarid valleys of Cochabamba. In the last two decades volunteers, researchers, farmers and students have been meeting in this unique place to learn and exchange experiences about agroecology. In that way, the 16 hectares that form this place recovered their ecological value thanks to the application of agroforestry systems coupled with agroecological measures.

We proved here that it is possible to produce fruits and vegetables without needing agrochemicals, simply applying the ancestral knowledge about sustainable agriculture that agroecology is providing us with. This technique has proven to be able to improve the productivity of the land and at the same time being ecologically sustainable. This place has therefore contributed not only to recover soils and biodiversity at the semiarid valleys of Cochabamba, but also to promote food and economic security.

However, in August 2017 we suffered a terrible fire here, affecting 11 of the 16 hectares that form our property. Most of our agroforestry systems, some of them more than 20 years old, got lost in a few hours as a consequence of the irresponsible act of a neighbour who was burning trash on his property.

From that moment, our team decided to reformulate their project and transform it into an “Institute of Investigation and Conservation of Andean Agriculture”. Such decision was due to the wish not to waste all wisdom accumulated during all these years, as well as our strong motivation to keep promoting agroecology as a tool for recovering the vulnerable ecosystem of the semiarid andean valleys of Bolivia.

We want to share our knowledge and experiences with all the people who are interested and willing to contribute in our project in order to prove that is possible to life in harmony with mother nature.

Which areas do we work in?

Application of agroforestry systems, preparation of Terra Preta and Madera Rameal Fragmentada (MRF), use of Kon-Tiki, general maintenance tasks, utilization of dry toilets, residual waters management; in this moment we need young man willing to fell burned trees, cut in pieces and transform them to biochar. And we want to make a playground for children from our own tree trunks. Creativity is wanted!

Which are the working conditions?

As long as the volunteer participates in the daily tasks, lunch, dinner and accommodation will be provided for free. You´ll only need to bring some food for breakfast, sleeping bag, gardening gloves and toilet paper.
