See my facebook page, which has excellent photos and gives a feel for what goes on here. I am a retired journalist and farmer and have 4 huts for romantic retreats, 2 off-grid. There are extensive organic gardens providing food for the house.

Much of the work for the helpXer is based around the maintenance and cleanliness of the huts. It can also include a trip to the beach to collect seaweed and driftwood or up to the forest for pine cones. Or taking Tye, a border collie, for a walk on one of the many fantastic walking tracks in the area starting right from the door from your hut. We work hard when the weather is good and we stay warm by the fire when the weather is horrid. Preference, i.e. more food (haha), is given to those competent with weedeater, paint brush, loppers and axe (we understand this can penalise the girls but that is just the way it is).

A quirky historic hut by the river (as seen on Air BnB, the hut by the river) is available for the helpx worker or, if booked out, there is a bedroom in the main house with electricity, it's own sun deck and entrance, and close to bathroom and wifi. Wifi access is for checking emails only. Free Wifi is available at the library, a short walk to the village. There is a film room for very good boys and girls and the food can be outstanding, can be average and occasionally you are sent down the road with money for fish and chips. You can stay forever if you treat me like a goddess and keep your room tidy.

We cater for gluten and dairy free, vegan and vegetarian but we love fish pie and venison sausages. We also have our own hens for their eggs and later on, when they aren't looking, we eat them.

Akaroa, a 25 min walk from the house, is a delightful seaside town close to ocean beaches with a great library, good bars, good restaurants, good take aways and, ok, there is no night club.
