Here at Cast Away Farm in the Carpathian Mountains, we combine premaculture design principles and traditional farming practices to create our homestead.
Our small holding is 1 hectare and is surrounded by beautiful forests, we are 5 km from the nearest village (Horodnic de Sus) and 10 km from the nearest town (Radauti).
We started out in 2015 and so far have completed a large fish pond (200 sq. m) which is also used for irrigation and swimming. Three swales have been constructed and planted, planted the fruit garden and sown a hemp and flax patch. We have recently acquired two milking goats and a flock of indian running ducks.
The main super adobe house is under construction with the basement in place and we hope to get the earthbag walls in place this year.
This yearís projects include building slow sand water filter, solar shower, summer kitchen, raised beds and a rocket stove mass heater.
The farm is connected to the national electric supply however we are planning to eventually go off-grid. We are also planning to provide workshops in off grid technology and sustainable living as of next year on.
We would welcome anyone who might have an input into these areas.
We welcome 1 or 2 volunteers who are enthusiastic to learn about permaculture and who are comfortable with basic living conditions. Accommodation is a two bed caravan or a tent can be provided. Minimum stay asked for is 2 weeks.
Meals are mostly vegetarian with fish on occasions. We donít use chemicals on the farm and can supply you with organic soap.
You will have the opportunity to learn the theory and practice some permaculture techniques:
Eco-building and vernacular architecture
Creating and maintaining a fish pond
Building swales and growing plants using no dig methods
Beekeeping with our good friend and neighbour
Goat husbandry Ė milking, making kefir and soft cheese
Growing hemp and flax
Creating a forest garden
Companion planting
The work is mainly assisting with gardening and general homesteading. Having building skills or being able to use a chainsaw and strimmer would be very helpful.
On your free time I can bring you to visit local monasteries, traditional farms (our neighbours still practice traditional farming using horses, you will have the opportunity to visit sheep and goat sheppards in the nearby hills), farmer`s markets and a mountain bike is available for exploring the local region.

How to get there:
from Radauti town (county Suceava) take road 17A toward the village of Horodnic de Sus. In Horodnic de Sus while you are on road 2E go across the first bridge then you`ll see a forestry road D44 on your left hand side. Keep on D44 as you will come across 4 bridges. Once you passed the 4th bridge continue straight ahead for 200 meters and the farm is on the right hand side, marked with a sign at the main gate: Cast Away Farm
