SOS - We need people immediately - to organise a job lot of industrial shelving! A couple of strong friends would be ideal...

And for general farm tasks.

One person who loves to clean and organise to put this place back into order after too many too busy seasons... would be great too

Generally we ask for a three week stay with an option to stay longer by mutual agreement. But in this instance if you could come now (21 June or in the next few days) one or two intense weeks would work too.

Our place is a beautiful renaissance chateau built of locally fired brick with stone details. It is set in the countryside overlooking a potager (vegetable garden) with antique fruit trees, surrounded by boxwood hedges and century old oak trees, a bamboo grove, a developing orchard, deciduous woodlands, and winding boxwood pathways.

In the field adjacent to the chateau grounds the project of creating a large scale seasonally changing labyrinthine walk was planted in 2006. The hedges, the backbone of the maze, are aligned along contour lines in harmony with the natural lay of the land following the strategy plans laid out by award winning landscape designers Martin Basdevant and Bas Smets (MBBS).
The garden of discovery as we call it, is an experiment in agroecology and is being developed following permaculture and sustainable development principals.

We grow organic vegetables between the hedges, we raise black pigs en plein air and we have numerous goats and two donkeys!

Our project is an attempt to reinstate this place into its cultural and sustainable context.

The Chateau de Padies is a listed building (ISMH) and the gardens are open to the public by appointment.

You will participate in the various tasks involved with all our undertakings. Our days are varied but definitely involve permaculture, vegetable gardening and planting, harvesting, mulching, watering, composting, construction of garden structures like fences, animal tractors, climbing structures, green houses - and we try to plant with the moon! Other involvements are household handiwork, woodwork/carpentry, adobe/cobb/mudbrick/stawbale construction, composting toilet construction and upkeep, roofing, tiling, electrical fitting, bamboo construction, poultry & goat rearing (pigs soon we hope), animal tractor upkeep and very importantly harvesting, preparing and eating great food! When we are organizing events, you will be helping. When the gardens are open, you will help to receive the visitors. To keep life sane, we all pitch in with general household tasks. An interest in Art and Architecture, both current and historic is a definite plus - computer programming and graphic design skills won't go astray either. Otherwise usual gardening: preparation of beds, feeding and caring for animals, preparing building for rentals - maintaining pool etc...

We welcome enthusiastic active and energetic people willing to learn and to teach. No slackers please! Some demonstrable commitment to sustainable practices is a definite plus. Flexibility is a must as well - everything we do here is a prototype of sorts! We try to put together teams that will work well together - always searching for the good fit!

To facilitate our planning, we need definite arrival dates at least a week before arrival - detailed travel arrangements can follow. Before we confirm your visit we will need full postal address and telephone numbers for yourself and a next of kin - we will photocopy ID documents on your arrival, and we shall photograph you for our helper log. We encourage you to have adequate insurance.

We use English as a common language - we speak french when french people are around. Please be sure to include HelpX in the subject line of all correspondence.
