We are renovating ruins on a South facing terraced site in the Minho region, a few minutes from Galicia (Spain). There are three main elements of work involved:

1. Building things: structures from wood, stone, lime and earth / clay.

2. New technology ventures: solar cooking, heating, biomass heating, biogas, LED lighting, watermill power. Finding ways to create and conserve energy for free and with little environmental impact.

3. Gardens and food. Using permaculture design systems to restore fertility and high productivity to abandoned terraces. Local soil is of a high acid content. By applying organic material and nitrogen fixers, we aim to achieve better PH balance and enhance soil quality.

Guests are welcome to a great outdoor covered shower heated with solar and wood, an enormous outdoor oak table fit for the feasts of elven Kings, a bread and pizza oven we built and a fully functional outdoor kitchen. We don't have a lot of indoor sleeping space, but we have areas for tents. And you are welcome to build a shelter in the forest by the river, or on the land if you have a good design in mind.

Which is a reminder of the river: a piece of hidden tranquility and coolness in the hotter afternoon days. Some deep sections for diving and swimming, clear and flowing all year. This is an old watermill site that we own and we plan to develop little by little. We may even make a temporary camp and sauna there this summer, if we have enough hands on deck!

June and July 2010 loads to do. Need to book spaces though, so let me know in advance if you want to join the team.
