Hello, my name is Ahmed and I live and work near to the village of Tagounite in the south of Morocco. We have a house and some land where we try to grow dates, and sometimes other vegetables. Our house is located about half an hour by foot from Tagounite, between Tagounite and the desert.

Our hope is to create a garden where we might grow some vegetables, despite the difficult conditions here. We also need help to maintain the palmerie, and in continuing the restoration of the house.

Depending on the time of year help needed might involve harvesting the date fruits, tidying up the palm trees by removing dead leaves and all year round the trees require watering with our traditional irrigation system.

The irrigation system also needs to be maintained, kept clear of the sand and debris which sometimes blows in from the Sahara! We are also trying to extend the irrigation system so that more land can be used to grow things.

We also try to grow vegetables between Autumn and winter when the temperature cools down.

Our house is a traditional mud and straw house, which we have partially restored. There is still much to be done on the house so we would also be very happy for your help with this. We are currently focussing on making mud bricks to rebuild parts of the house and creating shade areas for plants and trees.

This is a big job and this is why we need your help, to make something good out of this land, see what is possible in these difficult conditions and share it with other people. No previous experience is necessary, we will show you all you need to know to help us. But any expertise in gardening or permaculture would be appreciated. We also want to learn from you.

You can also help with more everyday tasks like tidying the house, washing up and cooking. Or if you have any other skills or interests we will try to find a way to use them.

Volunteers should expect to help around 3 hours per day, 15 hours per week, depending on the season. volunteers should be aware that during the summer, June to August, it is very hot, up to 50 degrees.

Because our project is new and resources are scarce we need to ask for a small contribution for food, water and electricity of 50 dihrams, which is 5 euros per day, to make our project possible.

We want to learn from you and hope to teach you something about the traditional simple life here near the desert. You will see how we live with little water, how we prepare food and entertain ourselves. Sometimes we play gnawa music together in the evening! We want to share our daily lives and culture with you.

To reach Tagounite, take the ctm bus from Marrakech, which leaves at around 11am, arriving Tagounite at around 20:30. There is also a night bus from Agadir to Tagounite.

If you have any questions about our project or need more information please get in touch!
