We are an isolated small organic farm in the middle of a thousand acres of jungle reserve in Southern Belize. The jungle includes broadleaf forest, riparian zone (including swamp forest) and a few miles of river frontage with several creeks running through the jungle. We are nestled between several other protected lands managed by local NGOs – nothing but jungle for miles!
The farm itself is just three acres, follows permaculture principles and is in its fledgling stage. This is an ideal opportunity to use your design skills and really create something. Already we have mango, breadfruit, mulberry, avocado, plum, vanilla, pineapple and coconut growing.

Livestock includes pigs, goats, local and Mennonite chickens and six dogs. Two dogs are in the pasture with goats but the rest are around the house so it is important you are comfortable with large dogs.
We focus on conservation and studying and understanding the world around us. This reserve is home to hundreds of species of birds, lizards, butterflies, bees and mammals. We see tapir footprints on the trail and occasionally capture a jaguar or puma on our trailcam. There are peccary nearby.
Access is by car, then boat, then on foot. The journey takes about 45 minutes from the town of Punta Gorda.
You will eat three farm fresh meals a day with us, work alongside Maya farmers, and you are free to swim in the creeks, or follow the jungle trails in your free time. You must have at least average physical fitness.

All our accommodation is rustic, we have rainwater collection, solar electricity and limited wifi, but also composting toilets, outdoor shower etc. Sleeping is either in a hammock or on an air mattress. There are friendly spiders.
Our internet access is data usage based 3G, which is not always reliable. We ask volunteers to limit usage to basic email, Facebook and Skype (voice only) or equivalent for personal usage, as data costs are quite high.
This is a remote location and working with us is not for everyone. Some people fit better than others and usually we can tell fairly early on. If you are scared of bugs, spiders and snakes this is probably not the place for you. If you want to photograph bugs, spiders and snakes you will love it!
You are expected to help with anything needed around the farm and home, but work atmosphere is not too structured. Activities or projects may include:
Biodiversity monitoring, trailcam wildlife surveillance, landscaping, food forest, biochar, rotational grazing, building raised beds, cooking on a rocket stove, electric fencing, maintaining and improving trails, planting trees, feeding/managing animals, animal housing, growing the farm, tidying up.

At certain times of year there are biting bugs outside, the temperature is around 90s during the day but cooler at night. Humidity is usually above 90%. The nearest town is 45 minutes away by foot, boat and car. It is very quiet here, the most noise is the parrots at dusk and the howler monkeys at any time.
This opportunity suits anyone wanting to experience a tropical farm, or is perhaps considering becoming self sufficient. Someone with permaculture knowledge or willingness to learn. It is hard manual labour sometimes but also a lot of fun and an opportunity to learn a lot.

Bring with you: Long sleeved shirt, long trousers, swimwear, rubber boots, closed rubber shoes (eg crocs), mosquito repellant. Sun block may be desired for the river journey in and out. We’re a long way from shops so any particular snacks or otherwise that you want.

This is a real adventure. Come be a part of the team and create something amazing.
