Committed to the health and well being of the planet & the community of Cano Negro, located near the Nicaragua border, I am investing my energies into this small pueblo, which is now my home. My children are grown & living abroad but practice & promote sustainable lifestyles which they learned from their mom growing up in Costa Rica. Now I have the time to share this knowledge with this special community, far off the beaten path. The most immediate need will be during July 2020 when the students will be on their 3 week vacation. Although I believe that children need free time, I am offering an alternative to the TV, video games and cell phones. We will be running the 3rd free summer camp with arts, song, dance, games, 1st aid review which we learned this january & whatever other skills the volunteers have & wish to share. This january we did our 1st river clean-up & hauled in 11 huge bags of trash & had lots of fun. Fluent Spanish is not necessary but some spanish language skills will be helpful. If you love children or would like an informal opportunity to teach & guide children, this may be just for you! After camp I will be looking for volunteers for general help with my projects & the community. You will stay either in my small cabin or you may be offered to stay with a host family in which case you would be asked to contribute toward meals. In my home you may be sharing a room with other volunteers.
Roofed Camping is an option as it often rains unexpectedly. I will supply basic kitchen & cooking items such as coffee, tea & spices. Whatever you would like to cook can be bought closeby. Families would need to stay in local lodging which I can help to reserve. My cabin is just too small. Sorry. This is a chance to experience a small community lifestyle dependent on tourism, fishing, birdwatchers, nature tours, cattle & pineapple. A few locals speak some english & would love to practice with you. Very few have traveled far from the area & enjoy learning about the rest of the world. You will eat local foods & be a part of the pueblo enjoying what the residents enjoy. The town hosts an evangelical & catholic church, 2 small restaurants, a tuesday health clinic, a handful of accommodations, a grammar school, supermarket, minimarket & police station. Best of all there are two environmental agencies in town - MINAE & CINAC. We can coordinate visits & projects with these offices. This is a RAMSUR WORLD HERITAGE WETLANDS SITE home of a mixed use reserve. Come, learn, enjoy & become our friend here. The local youth play football (soccer), almost daily on the field next door. You may go on boat trips up or down the Rio Frio & fishing is a very common activity. Music and dancing are enjoyed every weekend right in town. No need for a car. Everyone walks, rides a bike, a horse or goes by canoe or boat. I have kayaks & canoes which are great for moon viewing & of course fishing. We can also take trips to Rio Celeste, Lake Arenal & even San Carlos of Nicaragua...
