Virtue Farm is an establishing farm. Our 33 acre property overlooks Fraser Island, and includes 27 acres of remnant forest which will never be developed. The forest is an oasis for bird life and other animals and is great for walking.
Ten years ago, we started a vegetable and fruit garden using permaculture principles based on Linda Woodrow’s methods. We have been growing fruit and vegetables in an organic manner where chooks are part of the garden and recycling and re-using is premium. We let nothing organic leave site, either composting, mulching, feeding to chooks or repurposing. We have loved the journey and the bounty this has supplied and are now scaling this up to a small farm size. This will include 7 permaculture forest rows as well as a very large market garden. Our farm is called Virtue Farm because it is on Virtue Ave Booral, as well as the name fitting our beliefs. The word virtue can be a trait or disposition of character that leads to good behaviour. One example is that someone with virtue displays wisdom, courage, kindness, good manners, courtesy, modesty, generosity, and self-control in their life. They treat others fairly and esteem others highly and value the sanctity of life. They treat others better than they are treated. Someone who has virtue has good moral ethics. With this in mind, we try to live our lives by these characteristics.
The volunteers that we have had so far have enjoyed their time with us and have been happy to join in with our family and extended family. You will stay in the flat down stairs where you prepare your own breakfasts and lunches from food we provide and then we all join together for our evening meal.
We expect 5 – 6 hours of work per day per person depending on the work available. We vary this work, but at the moment there is an expectation of around 2 - 3 hours per day of rock picking or stick picking, and weeding. Lots of work in the vege patch and garden and other tasks depending on our needs and your skills. You will need your own hat, closed in shoes and water bottle.
While you are here, you should make time to go to Fraser Island. We are very flexible and happy to work around dates that you can access which are cheaper for you.
