Homestead in the rural mountains of western North Carolina.

Already established projects and infrastructure include a half acre organic garden from which we eat from through the growing season and on in to the chilly months of winter, several small cabins, community house, a yome (local version of a yurt), swimming pond, wood-fired hot tub, a complete wood shop with power and hand tools, and trails that extend in to our 24 acre woodland backyard and beyond.

Recent completed projects include: repairing the swimming pond (it sprung a leak!) and converting the yome into a blacksmith shop (we have been black smithing a lot!),
Ongoing never ending projects: mowing with hand tools (we live in a temperate rain forest. There is a jungle that is constantly trying to take over our buildings, trails, gardens and agroforestry plantings. This is the priority. Learn to use scythes, sickles, and machetes to effectively maintain a homestead) planting out LOTS of shrubs and trees all up and down the mountain, and keeping up with our little plants and sticking in new little seeds.

Upcoming projects: building custom doors and windows for the community kitchen, installing flooring, working with straw and mud! Gardening!!!

If you think you would like to come stay with us, try to give as much advanced notice as possible that we can coordinate our schedules and organize potential projects. Also let us know how long you intend on staying (for stays over a week we have a one-week trial period, and so long as everything seems dandy, you can stay the rest of the proposed time!) and what your expectations are when you arrive. Tell us about yourself and what types of skills you are most interested in learning so we can pair you up with an appropriate project. Ask us any questions or anything you want clarifications on.

It would be best if you had your own transportation, but we can pick you up from our nearest town, Marshall or Asheville, if necessary, and you can count on at least one trip to Marshall a week for coffee, internet, library, or just visiting around. We look forward to hearing from you!
