We live on a 96 acre property at Dixons Creek in the Yarra Valley, 65km north east of Melbourne. Most of our land is forest with abundant wildlife such as kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, wallabies, goannas and dozens of different bird species. It is a bit like living in a nature park.
Our small farm consists of a large vegetable patch and orchard, which provides most of our fresh produce with a small amount left over for sale at a weekly organic market where we have a regular stall. Help is always welcome in the garden as well as with small building projects and property maintenance.
We provide accommodation for you in our spare room with double bed. We also provide all food (shared with us)and is mostly vegetarian. In return we ask that helpers work for around five hours a day. There is a dam to swim or fish in, plenty of opportunities for bushwalks or resting in our hammock. If you have your own transport there are many places of interest for sight-seeing day trips in this region.
There will be plenty of opportunities to learn about permaculture (we are tutors in several local courses) and how it helped us design our property. Other areas that could make it a valuable learning experience include passive solar house design, our moves towards sustainable living, off grid solar power, gardening, vegetable and fruit varieties and much more.
We are interested in people (non-smokers) who would like to help out and learn new skills as well as share their experiences with us. We always try and fit in with the interests of visitors. Potential tasks include:-
Garden type tasks- weeding, planting, composting, watering, landscaping etc.
Fire prevention activities
Helping to build our new mud brick cottage
Harvesting, cooking and preserving
Helping out with permaculture tours that we run and on our market stall
Looking after our chooks, ducks and dog
If you are interested, send us an email with some background information, your interests and what you would like to get out of a stay.
We are 20km from Lilydale Railway station and can arrange pickup/drop off, if you dont have your own transport.
PS. You can find out a bit more about our place including past HELPERS by clicking the HELPERS link on the right side of our blog (google "Tenderbreak"). Helpers should have appropriate insurance to cover their activities whilst staying at Tenderbreak.
We really enjoy having helpers stay with us and have made many wonderful friends doing so. Hope to hear from you soon!
