Information for volunteers who apply to Los Guindales: Please read carefully

The Farm: We are a small community of adults (around six) and children (two) surrounded by a forest of chestnuts, oaks and fruit trees in a beautiful valley in a protected area in Andalusia: Valle del Genal. We are on the path of self-sustainability so we try to produce what we need, taking care of the land, growing vegetables, harvesting fruits, forestry, making bread, keeping chickens, eco-building of our shelters with what we have here.
All this requires lot of time and energy. We are just at the beginning of the path.
We are open to people to come: tourists, groups, travellers, students. Part of our farm is a Healing Center, which is run by two of our members, "The four elements House". We are also running a center to investigate and practice eco-building traditional techniques, carpentry and earth techniques, as well that we train apprenticeships and give workshops.

Our life: There are three different homes here that are related like neighbours. In our daily lives we function as separate families, or houses, within a few minutes walk from each other, but we might go for days without seeing each other. We make our decisions as a community at a weekly group meeting, to which you are welcome, and we often work together as a group, but ultimately we live as distinct groups and need volunteers to respect this privacy. One of these groups is the volunteers camp “Campamento Gitano”. On important thing: we have decided to share our home with volunteers, this doesn't mean share our life the same way, we need to be respected as families, sometimes we work together and do activities together, but we are not a “commune”.

About your experience volunteers in Los Guindales:
We offer an experience in the participation of our permaculture design, performing different activities depending on the stage we are at in the design as well as the needs and contingencies related to the eco-village, and people living in it.
Allongside our pracitcal daily tasks we follow a path of inner work and spiritual relationship with the Earth, if you want to there is the possibility of participating.
An important aspect of your experience at Los Guindales, that may be very different from other places that are similar, is that we offer the opportunity to live very independantly, organising all aspects of your life by your self, this applys both to physical requirements such as the organisation of food etc, but also functions as an opportunity to live emotionally independantly, what we offer is the opportunity to learn and grow as an individual in this environment of true self motivation, and our farm is really not suitable to anyone who is not already very self motivated and emotionall self sufficient. If you wish to learn different skills and work hard, please come.

Jobs and Organisation of Work: Throughout the year we do a wide range of work with permaculture principals in mind, depending on he time of year tasks can be really different, but predominantly agriculture, wood chopping, brush clearance, and eco-building. We work in the morning, waking up to start at eight, work until breakfast at ten and then work again until lunch at around 2. the organisation of the week varies but we try to stick to two days a week working with each of he two households and one day a week of common work when we all work together. A lot of the working time for volunteers is spent working indepentantly as a group of volunteers, if you are the only volunteer that may mean working alone a lot, following the tasks that have been given and started in previous days.

Accommodation and Food:
Volunteers share meals, and live in their own separate camp, there is space for tents and your own kitchen. It is therefore essential to bring a tent and be prepared to organize and be self sufficient in terms of food, in this respect the volunteers act as each others family.

It is necessary to bring own camping tent and sleeping bag. From September 2016, however, volunteers will stay in a yurt. So there will be no need to bring tent.

- Availability of at least 1 month, our space is most suitable to those able to stay longer than this (with weekly evaluations).
- Ability to work alone
- Self-management of food in common with the volunteer group (about 150€ per month). There is space to create a communal garden and we have fruit according to the season. The exchange for us is the aid offered to us by your work as a volunteer in exchange for the experience and learning that this place can offer. We finance the food to volunteers who stay for more than one month, this will be done after the monthly assessment and according to our economy.
- Good physical constitution for hard work in the mountains.
- Motivation for learning: green building, permaculture design activities (clearing, orchards, water, maintenance of lanes, edible forest, wood, etc.)
-Self motivation, you need to be working for yourself ultimately, you need to be satisfied with the work that you do because you have done it well, and not need to be told well done.
- humility, emotional maturity and commitment to internal work. (Possibilities to participate in our ceremonies and spiritual works)

Activities: We have sacred sites and other reproductive spaces where we perform, workshops, ceremonies, meetings related to healing.

Language: We speak Spanish in our daily lives.

Surroundings: The nearest village is a 15 minute walk, there are shops, post office, bars and wifi. There are good walking trails, river, and one and half hour drive beach an hour.

Things to bring: tent, sleeping bag, flashlight, outdoor working shoes and comfortable footwear. Warm clothes, waterproofs. Music and movies, musical instruments welcome.
