Location: suburban neighborhood in Bellingham, WA -- you can read more below the ******* about our area.
We won't be needing any help until April or May of 2020. Thanks!
We are looking for folks who might want to visit us, for a few days to a week, who are open to doing varied tasks inside the house and out (some examples: helping T with ongoing weeding and garden maintenance, landscape projects, washing windows, deep cleaning, digging and lifting for some building projects).
When our projects are outdoors, we work rain or shine!
We only host non-smokers. If you write to us to request hosting, please confirm that you are a non-smoker.
We can accommodate up to two people at a time (partners or friends). We generally host for a maximum of one week.
We ask for approximately 24 hours of help for each seven day period you are with us (or 3.5 hours/day if you`re not here exactly a week).
It might look like this if you're here a week:
--six days of 4-hour help and one day completely off
--fewer days of longer hours of help and several whole days off
We`re a married couple in our late 50`s whose three adult children live a few hours south, leaving us with empty bedrooms most of the time. We often have friends visiting, and we also host guests through airbnb; this is a very busy household at times! The bedrooms are all upstairs. They are small and comfortable and share a bathroom with others who are staying here. We`re always happy to hear from you if we sound like a good fit -- please understand that we often don`t have room.
We`re quite busy with work and social activities and are looking for guests who are independent workers and travelers -- you can spend your time off exploring the area by bus if you don`t come with a car. We`d be happy to help with ideas about places to go, having lived here a long time, and we can direct you to great running/hiking trails close by. We cook and eat well (mostly vegetarian). While we`re sometimes able to prepare and eat meals all together, there are times you`ll be preparing your own meals for yourself in our well-stocked kitchen because of our busy and varying schedules. We have wifi. We have a very nice dog who lives inside (but doesn`t have to go near your bedroom).
We ask for one thing before you arrive: your emergency contact information. After you`re here, we ask for information about your travel/health insurance and some sort of photo ID. We want to be able to host you knowing that we would be able to offer help, and contact someone on your behalf, in the case of a health emergency.
We live in the Geneva area of Bellingham: a quiet, lovely neighborhood on Lake Whatcom, a ten mile long lake popular for swimming and boating in the summer. There is lake access one block away from our house, and we have a one-person flat-water kayak you are welcome to borrow.
From Geneva it is a 10 minute drive to downtown Bellingham. We are near a bus line (a 3 minute walk up the street); the bus comes hourly and goes downtown, where you connect with other buses. If you are a nightlife-seeking person without your own car, you can`t easily get back to our house late at night without a bike or Lyft (approximately $15) or a good walk. Some people who stay with us explore the city during "bus hours" and then hang out here to enjoy our quiet neighborhood in the evenings.
Bellingham itself has wonderful parks and natural places to explore, as well as two great downtown areas. There is an active arts community and great music. The Alaska Ferry departs from Bellingham, and we have an airport (BLI is the code) that services many airlines. There are often inexpensive non-stop flights to and from Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Denver, Maui, and Honolulu!
We are 1.5 hour drive to Mt. Baker Ski area (averaging the most annual snowfall in North America), 1 hour drive to North Cascades Highway with amazing wilderness, 1 hour drive to Anacortes (connecting with ferries for the San Juan Islands), 1.5 hour drive to Vancouver, BC (depending on border crossing), and 1.5 hour drive to Seattle. Basically, we`re in between two great cities and in the middle of fantastic wilderness and recreation opportunities!
