We love hosting volunteers here and enjoy sharing our simple way of life.
We are a tiny, pioneering, intentional community based on permaculture ethics and principles. Our interest is in growing towards a way of being that is gentle on nature, animals and humans. We have been here for over 13 years.
Permanent people for now are Barbara and Emma, One Portuguese, one from Northern Ireland.
It is best to check out our 'website' - and the link to this page shows our vision for the land. We are committed to the practice of Permaculture as we understand the aspects of people care, earth care and a deep regard for simple spirituality.
ABOUT THE PLACE......
As far as accommodation goes, we PREFER if you bring your own tent/accommodation. However we do have tents if you need one.
We have a huge pond for swimming and a paddling pool - really important as the weather heats up!
Our closest village is Povoa de Atalaia, but we are actually between Povoa and 2 ancient Roman villages called Alpedrina and Castelo Novo - with lovely views of the Gardunha Mountains.
In terms of languages spoken here - we speak Portuguese, English,a little Spanish and a little French. Mostly we converse in English or Portuguese.
We eat local, seasonal - mostly vegetarian with vegan options - but warning on occasions we eat 'happy meat' - meaning something local and ideally organic. We eat well and are not really fundamentalists about food, as long as it is prepared with love!
One other thing, if you do smoke, we ask you do not do so in the common areas.
ABOUT THE HELP REQUIRED.......
When the season opens for volunteers we need people who are willing to help out with our daily tasks, cleaning, chopping veggies, helping in the garden or helping with 'odd jobs'. Those with natural building skills are super welcome, but so are those who like to serve by making things beautiful and keeping the common spaces tidy!
If you have experience of volunteering/working in in gardens/farms we would like to hear from you.
The minimum stay with us is 3 weeks in order to get the most out of a visit and get the chance to be part of the community life here.
WHAT WE OFFER...
We have a pond for swimming in spring/summer, a sheltered common place, a common kitchen and camping kitchen, several beautiful compost toilets, and ways to charge your electronic stuff by solar power. The land itself is off-grid.
We offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner to volunteers. For breakfast you will prepare that yourself – this includes bread, butter, muesli, oats, seasonal fruits, jams and cow’s milk. Lunch and dinner are mostly communally prepared.
On ‘days off’ you will prepare all your own meals. We will have a stock of basic groceries you can buy. If you want fancy things or you have special needs, these can be purchased locally.
We will have a camping kitchen, which is open for the volunteers with a stove and utensils for your use along with fresh spring water for drinking.
Peace, hope and joy,
If you are interested in coming and taking part, please get in contact.
