‘How would you like me to help today ?’

By applying volunteers are expected to have read this description and to have good enough language skills, usually English or Spanish, to ask:-

‘How would you like me to help today ?’

And to understand the answer.

Location: Spain, Almeria sandwiched in Cabo de Gata National Park.

Now accepting requests for September 2020 onwards.

Expectation is 2-3 hours activity per day in return for accommodation. Food NOT typically provided.

No trips etc. are automatically included unless part of the requirements at the time. However, once the work has been done, opportunities often arise and of course helpers are entirely free to disappear and do their own thing in the considerable amount of spare time available.

Duties according to skills offered and needed during the requested period. Helpers are expected to communicate openly and easily e.g. by asking what help is needed each day if a previous task has been completed.

Please note that when previous helpers describe the work as easy or not like work at all this can be because of a combination of good attitude and/or not realising that they were helping in ways where the value of the help was greater than the effort required to provide it. This often happens with physically fit helpers whose style is interdependent and collaborative.

Every now and then we take time out (a few hours) to help in the community environment and volunteers are included in this. For volunteers the day starts at 8.30am usually and tasks are usually completed by mid-day except when they involve outdoor activities.

Please do not apply if you expect to do no work. We are aware of the value of the opportunity and offer it through choice not need. A typical day will have a 2-3 hour mini project.

It is possible to wash clothes and helpers have their own room with wifi and air conditioning.

Helpers are encouraged to learn about Almeria, it’s beaches, parks, cities, culture and food etc. online especially through YouTube videos.

Non-smoking inside the house.

What kind of person is likely to get the most out of this offer ?

The characteristics of the happy helper are being hard working, knowing how they’d like to enjoy their free time, good communication, an open heart and mind and ownership of the golden rule of ethics. Likely to be direct communicators, feminists in the sense of equality and prone to resolve any interpersonal issues with others directly. Respectful of self and others. Lovers of nature and the environment.

What kind of person is likely to be unhappy here ?

The characteristics would be a sense of entitlement, mistaking kindness for weakness, prioritising of own needs way ahead of the project or others, judgemental or overestimating their own importance or knowledge. Indirect communicators e.g. gossipy conversation style.

Age requirements: after recent discussion of the issue we remain open to all ages for the moment but expect younger helpers (18-30) to be comfortable communicating with all age groups courteously including asking what help is required each day. The age range of people present during your stay may be anything from 18 to 85.

We are considering making the opportunity available only to the 30+ age group and helpers below this age will need to demonstrate an understanding of how to be helpful and courteous communication. Two way consent is assumed in all matters e.g. no recording or photography without permission - after the event if circumstances dictate. Any recording, audio or visual, or sharing of personal information without consent is considered a breach of trust.

Applications therefore especially welcome from mature applicants and or those with an easy and undemanding communication style.

Applications otherwise welcome regardless of age, race, sexuality, gender etc. Couples welcome - but individual profiles usually expected.
