We are an energetic and enthusiastic English couple who gave up teaching in order to run a farmhouse holiday rental business here in rural South-West France. Energy and enthusiasm notwithstanding, keeping our property and grounds up to the standard we like to offer our guests is hard work and so we are always looking for like-minded people to help us in return for good food and lovely accommodation.

This year (2020) we are able to host from mid-February onwards, and are ideally looking for different skill sets for different periods of the year (though in truth, electricians, carpenters and plumbers are ALWAYS needed!). Couples are especially welcome, as are mature people - but the most important asset is a willingness to muck in and be cheerful!

Through the spring, outdoors there will be some gardening (preparing the vegetable garden, cutting the hedges and so on) and maintenance (paving, painting, sanding and varnishing woodwork etc). Indoors, we are in the process of converting a barn to a library/cinema room, so would like help with pointing stonework, putting up bookshelves, sanding and varnishing floorboards and wiring in the lighting and a home cinema system.

Once our summer season starts, the requirement is more for people to help with changeovers, and in this respect our "dream team" would be a motivated couple who, once they had learned the ropes, could stay throughout July and August as our Saturdays and Sundays are manic and we need people to know what they are doing.

We are very relaxed about how the suggested 25 hours a week of work are arranged - usually our HelpXers have worked five days out of seven, but if you would prefer three days of eight or nine hours, that's probably fine too (depending on what we have planned). We don't work seven days a week, though, so you can expect two days per week to explore the area or just relax around the site.

The accommodation we offer on site is very comfortable, with en suite facilities (shower, wc and basin) and completely private. We can offer double rooms for couples, twin rooms for two friends or single rooms for independent travellers. There is WiFi access and we have bikes you can borrow. We provide meals with drinks on working days and access to our kitchen facilities on non-working days.

For a couple or family wishing to help us through the summer season, we rent a separate small cottage in the hamlet for our helpers so that they have private living space away from our rental guests. At this time of year, we provide meals on working days and offer a food allowance for non-working days.

Our house is situated in a tiny hamlet about 15 minutes drive from the nearest town of any size. The countryside around here is stunning, and it's also a very historic area - we are surrounded by bastide towns and the World Heritage Site of Albi is about 40 minutes from here. If you want modern civilisation, Toulouse is about an hour and three-quarters away - though if you are interested in south-west France, you are probably (like us) looking for peace and tranquility!

We have a very soppy and well-behaved Springer spaniel. We are both keen cooks so our food is all home-made - and much of it home-grown and organic, including eggs from our own chickens. And if you are a keen cook, we would love you to produce some meals for us all to share.
