Aloha and thank you for taking the time to review our farm. My husband, 14 year old daughter and I look forward to meeting and sharing our land to open hearted, independent and animal friendly people. Please review the following information to see if you feel our farm would be a good fit. On average helpers stay from 2-4 weeks, however, helpers have stayed as long as 8 months upon mutual agreement. Please remember this is not a couchsurfing group; so read through the whole listing to make sure you are comfortable with the arrangements.
Different tasks vary between gardening, music promotion, maintenance, animal care, cleaning, and building, we also encourage you to use your skills and interests which you are passionate about; such as different artistic skills, car maintenance, and different aspects of computer work.
We are looking to host those who eat vegetarian (includes no eggs), or vegan or at least willing to eat that way while on the property. Also no smoking, drinking, or drugs while on the property.
You should bring: Work shoes, working/garden gloves, a flash light (or two), rain poncho and/or an umbrella, bug spray and sunscreen, clothes you are willing to get dirty (we do have some old clothes for use). Any electronic devices such as laptops or phone for your own use.
We are very flexible on tasks, schedules, and traveling. We want you to get the best out of both, Organic Farming as well as Hawaii. Volunteers vary from 1 to 4 and we have others on the farm renting a space. We tend to fill up quickly, so we can not hold a spot until we have your confirmed flight details.
We are 3 miles from the coast (very rocky, not safe for swimming, but very beautiful for hiking/picnic /soaking/little swim in large tide pools) in Hawaiian Paradise Park , about 10 miles from Keaau and Pahoa, and about 25 min south of Hilo and the Hilo Airport (by car). We are also close to a hiking trail which opens up to a magical secluded swimming beach which often has turtles.
The property was intended as a healing/spiritual center. Though we are not currently practicing healing methods professionally at this time, we believe that the positive energy and support of the people and property, and of course being here on the Big Island of Hawaii can help you grow towards your highest potential. Most of the time helpers are involved individually or in pairs with their daily tasks and then have lots of time to connect and coordinate with the other helpers for leisure, programs and travel time that they arrange on their own. We have lots of mainly spiritual and uplifting books and movies to share.
We're on only 1 acre, but we are using every inch to become self-sufficient and environmentally sound. We are on solar and water catchment systems, so we try to be as mindful of our usage and respectful of our resources such as getting into small habits such as short showers, plugging electronic devices in during the day, and unplugging devices when not in use or needed, are appreciated.
We have dogs, cats and hopefully a horse soon. Our large greenhouse with mainly kale, tomatoes and tulsi and our land with hundreds of mainly young fruit trees such as avocado, rollenia, soursop, and papayas with other exotic trees which we sale/trade. When available, extra fruit and milk are shared with our helpers.
Most helpers start between 7am and 9am, stopping at lunch time, therefore you would have the afternoons to sightsee, relax or go on adventures.
18 hours per week with the week starting on your first night, work schedule is flexible and there is no set hours per day, you can also work overtime to accommodate extended days off travel plans.
We provide a room in the greenhouse or garden shed or large tent under a roof with mattress. You may borrow bedding upon request. Most helpers use their phones for media use, but you can borrow our computer/phone for emergencies, emails and facebook. We do not give out wifi codes for use on individuals media because our wifi is not strong enough to support helper's own phones, but again you can usually use our computer Monday thru Friday or by individual arrangement. We also offer periodic use of a Quantum Pulse (healing machine) for those interested. Volunteers share an outdoor covered kitchen and a simple compost toilet. We provide our volunteers with a few simple food supplies, but you will need to provide the majority of your own food. There is room to store your personal foods that you have purchased. You will experience a rustic lifestyle that may at times feel like camping! Expect all things that come with living closely with nature, including bugs, very occasional power outages, sometimes spotty cell service, and getting physically dirty.
TRANSPORTATION We are located right near a bus stop for easy transportation. Hitchhiking is also a common form of transportation if you are comfortable doing so (Big Island is very safe). Most recommended is if you can rent a car, even for a couple of days, that would really help for those magical places off the main roads.I am usually available weekdays, for complimentary pick up at the airport if I am already in town. If you would like me to pick you up at a day/time when I am not in town, you can choose the above transport choices or I can do it for $10 for gas.
We do not have insurance that would cover your stay, so we highly recommend you have your own health/accident insurance that would cover you here.
