Dear helpxers,

So many of you have become part of our lives and contributed so much to Humanities Spring: Kids... We are looking forwards to another wonderful collaboration for the summer of 2020.

HS Kids: Actors, Sculptors and Cooks is a full-immersion camp with week-long sessions for Italian children (ages 7-16) who want to learn the English language by living it in joyful and profound experiences with a staff made up of artists, cooks, writers, and people who love being in the country. We all have so much fun together and the program works miraculously well -- the children learn a lot almost without noticing; I think that is because they are so focused on the experiences so that they learn by osmosis -- the way we all learn our first languages.

That said, we are looking for assistant counselors to help with the cooking and art and theater activities. So it would be great if you are interested in teaching and also love one of these activities (as an amateur is fine). Usually helpxers are assistant teachers, but sometimes you can be teachers as well; they will work that all out together on skype or whataspp before you come. We have been doing this course for ten years so have archives of materials and ideas but are also receptive to your ideas; we will help you shape them so they help the children with their English as well.

We are especially looking for cooking teachers-- you just have to like making cookies and cakes or sweets of any kind as so many of our art teachers are coming back from next year -- but we are open to theater and art teachers too of course. Art doesn't have to be sculpture; it can be painting or collage -- we do all sorts of things. Often our art activities involve being out in the Subasio regional park (that's where the school is)but we are really open to anything.

Volunteers do between 14 and 16 HS slots... that is between 20 and 25 hours a week ..You have Saturdays and Sundays off. A typical schedule could be: helping with the cooking activities 4 mornings a week (10:00 - 12:30, 4-6 children per group) and then helping Monday, Tuesday and Friday afternoons with at least 2 other teachers because the children -- from 16-18 are all together in the afternoons (Monday children make their own diaries; Tuesday we go for a nature walk to the natural spring nearby where we often swim -- the water is cold but it is lovely; Friday we rehearse for the theater shows, practise reading diaries, and pack etc -- getting ready for the good-bye party with parents in the evening). Or you might do the morning activity and then help every evening with the diary-writing or story reading before bed activity and then just help one afternoon. We try to make schedules work for everyone and spend a lot of time talking with you on skype out to sort out what would be best for you (and well us, too!). It is tiring but extremely rewarding work. We are also committed to making sure you have time to see a lot of the lovely towns, art, festivals, concerts (many of them free) etc in our area and we have a car for teachers and someone on staff who will organize outings for you on the weekends -- and take you, too! Assisi is an absolutely beautiful town; with lots of Roman and early Renaissance art and architecture; it is also small and a very peaceful place to be in. We hope you will get to know it well while you're here. We go in once a week with students and do art projects and games with them there, trying to help them look at some of the art and connect to it.

We start this summer on June 14th and run through September 11th. We are looking for people who can do at least two weeks, the more the better as we put a lot of time and thought into training everyone -- so we will give priority to people who would like to stay for at least 4 weeks, but we are very open. If it seems like a good fit, we will definitely say yes!!! And be so happy to have you with us!!!

I hope this helps. I am sure I have forgotten many things but please do send questions if you have them.
