WELCOME to our site. Thanks for your interest in our International Intern Initiative:LEARN-WORK-PLAY. We have positions to fill. We need people who are willing to learn, who can contribute to our community. We are a work in progress in need of construction help and landscape improvement. Tom is a building contractor and instructor, so you can learn from his experience while you work. We expect you to contribute four to five hours per day in order to learn the skills we can provide you. This property is a progressive educational venue utilizing heritage, art, and entertainment to develop an appreciation for our construction projects. If you wish to be part of a unique and extraordinary venue, we encourage you to apply. We inhabit a 2 acre site in the subtropical rain forest & wetlands of Lacombe, Louisiana on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain: 40 miles to the New Orleans French Quarter; 30 minutes to the Gulf Coast.

We are on the fringe of the 18,000 acre Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. Just yards from our property is a 31-mile bicycle trail, the Tammany Trace. Free bikes provided for exploring and trail trips. Kayaks rent for $35/day for trips on Bayou Lacombe.

We have several options for your interest and help:
1)IDI'TMIHUAI--Institute for the Development of Indigenous Technology & Museum of Indian Heritage Unified Art Initiative is an edu-tainment venue based upon an interpretive Mayan Indian and Choctaw Indian theme. Help is needed for supervised work on projects related to modified Mayan architecture, art, astronomy, and agronomy.

2)The Lacombe Heritage Center is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit dedicated to preserve, protect, promote, and present the environmental, historical, and cultural heritage of the area, in order to pass along this heritage to future generations.

3)Tom and Matt's Habitat is our Sip, Sup, and Snore hospitality venue. This is our physical site where you will work and live and learn.

4)Indian A. Jones Tours specializes in eco-adventure and historical tours of the area along the Gulf Coast with special emphasis on First American culture and history. We also conduct in-depth cultural heritage and adventure tours for select clients in the Yucatan and Central America.

Personal info...
Tom: I like all music, although all I can play is the radio. I love dogs, blue sky flying high, reef diving, clear water, good wine, lovely women, intelligent men, existentialism, exploration, excitement and enjoyment! I pride myself on being a good HelpX host, if only slightly crazy. Give it a try. My life motto: "If I can, I must!"

We welcome interested and interesting people who can contribute to our mission. As part of our LEARN-WORK-PLAY program, you will be taught skills and given training in various areas of our development and action plan. As a volunteer/guest you are expected to contribute four to five hours per day to our mission. During your free time, we will enable you to experience the recreational and cultural benefits of our area for your enjoyment.

While there are openings for cleaning and hauling, digging, landscaping, house-keeping chores, and general grunt work, we are specifically interested in teaching for skills in electrical work, carpentry, masonry, and other trades. I am a retired contractor and teacher and can instruct HelpXers in the trade skills. There are always several projects underway, some large, some small to which you can contribute.

Digital technology skills are also sought along with other creative talents to produce videos for our Louisiana Video Productions. Your ideas and help are needed and welcome.

The Helper's Routine is a'tongue-in-cheek' You Tube video about our facility and need for talented people who have the skills to contribute to our project was produced by our Louisiana Video Productions with the creative input of Romain Bogrand and Mathieu Veniere, two HelpXers from France.

While the content of Helper's Routine video is presented in a fun way, the need is genuine. Yes, we have fun and create our projects with the help of other talented people. If you feel you have the ability and the desire that you wish to contribute to a singularly unconventional project you are welcome to contact us. Please provide a fairly comprehensive resume or bio. Thank you!

We have just had the most amazing week, not only on this trip, but for as long as I can remember. This is thanks to Tom, our host, and all the other people in his house (Larry, Michael, Noemie and Fabien). They are all, in different ways, inspirational, open and wise.

We had been told about Southern hospitality but this surpassed all expectation. In return for this Sean did carpentering

I painted some railings and did some gardening;

and Noemie and Fabien helped to build a waterfall.

We will never forget this week. We’ll keep in touch, and may even be back!

We’re now on our way to Atlanta.

A couple from the UK told about their stay at Tom & Matt's Habitat.
