COVID-19 Update: We currently have two HelpXers who are sheltering with us until this is over. We will not be taking in anyone new this year. Please be safe. Hank and Anita

NOTE: We are looking for helpers to make maple syrup from mid-February to mid-April 2020. Our first helper this year contacted us in August of 2018, fully six months before the season started. We turned down more than a dozen helpers because we were fully booked. If you want the full Canadian experience of living as a member of our family and helping to make maple syrup you need to contact us early and to commit to a date. You're not in the books until you've committed to an arrival date.

During the late winter and early spring of 2020 we will be running a new mainline, new lateral lines, and setting more than 200 more taps. Last year we had a great year and made 150L of syrup. This year we had a terrible year and made 160L of syrup. Our improved systems should let us make from 300L to 500L next year. It will be a lot of work but it's rewarding because we often finish the day with waffles and hot maple syrup right from the pot.

Don't wait too long to make your plans.

We are a very small family farm (homestead). We have decided to take some time off from raising animals but continue to make maple syrup in the spring. We also support our local farm community and local farms.

There are LOTS of pictures on our Facebook page. Please click the link above and have a look.

Winter 2019 Update

We will be making maple syrup in Spring 2019 and will be looking for help from mid-February through to mid-April. In 2017 we produced 23L of maple syrup. In 2018 we produced 150L of maple syrup. In 2019 we will be increasing the number of trees and taps, running two evaporators, and upgrading our vacuum system and reverse osmosis system. We hope to make 300L this season. There will be lots of work to do in the late-winter and early-spring.

If you want the full Canadian maple syrup experience this is the place to get it. All of our equipment is homemade on the farm.

We continue to take a break from farming animals but our maple syrup production will be in full swing.

Main Listing

We will ask you to contribute to family life by helping with the cooking and dishes. We are both excellent cooks and use as many of our own or local organic ingredients and eat organic as possible. We feed most of our animals organic, locally grown and ground feed.

We live in a rural setting 30 minutes south of Ottawa in a large mostly finished straw bale home. We are in our early 50s with a 30 year old daughter living away and a 10 year old son and 14 year old daughter at home. We have a large, well behaved cat and a rabbit in the house. Our guest room is 10x15 (2m x 3m) with a queen sized bed, a large bathroom with claw foot tub, a large shower, and separate water closet. We have unlimited ADSL with wifi as well as Netflix and many DVDs and an Xbox One. We have a few fun board games and a very large Lego collection as well.

We are intelligent and funny and run a chaotic, fun loving, and very easy going household.
