We have been saving horses bound for slaughter for more than 20 years. We achieved 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2009. You can check us out via our website link above. We take in horses, rehabilitate them physically and psychologically as needed, and sometimes train them in order to find them new adoptive homes. We have anywhere from 20-45 horses here at one time, plus two ranch dogs, 20+ chickens, and some feral cats.

Helpers will need to feed hay twice per day, clean pens every day, ensure waters are full, let chickens out in the morning and in at night, and feed the dogs and cats in the evening. It is important to feed the horses in such a way that they will not fight (i.e. piles of hay not too close together or too close to the horse in the next pen). Once I show you how to do all this I will expect for you to be able to do it every day without needing reminders. I often have to leave for several days at a time to haul horses, which pays for hay, so you will need to be able to take care of everything yourself while I'm gone. It's also important to visually check over every horse at least once a day (while feeding is a good time) to notice if any of them are looking lethargic, have obvious injuries, etc.

Work is about 3-5 hours every day in exchange for room and board, leaving plenty of time to explore the area or learn how to train horses if you're interested. As for food: Occasional full meals will be provided; at other times you can help yourself from the fridge/pantry/etc. It would be appreciated if you would buy your own groceries once in a while, particularly if you have certain things you like.

People with prior horse experience are much preferred, but anyone with common sense will get along all right. We have a good round pen and arena for training and riding if you are sufficiently competent. Accommodations include a room in the main house with two twin beds and two trailers on the property. This is a great position for a driven person with good instincts needing practical experience.

We do prefer a two week review, when at that time Host and Volunteer must agree to a longer stay. We prefer commitment of at least 90 days (due to time it takes to train someone in the care of our horses) But we do except shorter stays for farm maintenance type volunteers. (Projects etc)
