We are an educational charity and centre for learning about low-impact living, run by a resident community with the help of short- and medium-term volunteers.

The Charity owns a Victorian mansion built in 1848 which currently serves as B&B accommodation for participants on courses offered at the centre, as well as other visitors. The grounds include a Victorian walled garden and fruit garden and small working farm as well as terraced lawns, woods, pasture and a stream.

We are looking for volunteers to help run the B&B house and grounds in return for food, lodging in volunteer accommodation, and a taste of communal living. Daily jobs include housekeeping, assisting in the main kitchen, gardening, helping the dairy farmer and maintenance work such as construction, decorating and organising. Some of the work is physically demanding and volunteers will usually rotate between different jobs according to current necessity, working roughly 35 hours per week, with two days per week off.

Community members and volunteers eat meals together, take it in turns to keep communal areas clean, and there may be communal activities in the evenings. The kitchen is vegetarian; we grow organic vegetables and fruit; our eleven free-range chickens provide us with eggs; and our three-cow organic dairy produces milk, yogurt and cheese. Most cooking and heating is wood-fueled.

Volunteers are invited to come for a minimum of two weeks and if someone is interested to stay longer then the community would talk about this after the first week - we often have longer term volunteers who are wanting to build their experience in hospitality, gardening, farming or maintenance. We think this situation is ideal for people interested in the hospitality business looking to gain some hands-on experience, as well as anyone wishing to gain experience of living a low-impact life-style together with like-minded people in a beautiful setting.

We regret that we do not have childcare facilities on site though we welcome parents with children; we further regret that we cannot accommodate volunteers with pets.
