A permaculture farm and art space located in a forest near Erongaricauro, Michoacán, México.
Dedicated to biodiversity, sustainability, home-scale and large-scale permaculture techniques, organic gardening, art, and community living.
We began in 2004 on 83 acres of pine, oak, and madrone forest. We are off the electrical grid using no outside power. Our water is from rain catchment. We use wood stoves for cooking and have five cabanas, huts, an art studio, and six composting toilets.
Activities can include plant propagation, video production, cooking, general maintenance, seed collection, garden preparation, trail maintenance, eco-construction and more.
Special roles include; Working with Brian on research, writing, and translation. graphic arts, event management, community projects, fundraising, and more.
?????We do experiments with food science, alternative agriculture, lifestyle, and cultural design. We video our work and publish it on social networks such as Youtube and Quora. We need people with a lot of creativity and flexibility.
??????Food is included: Vegetarian, sometimes with a meat option. There are fresh eggs from the chickens. We don't serve picky eaters.
When there are few people, you will cook for yourselves. When there are many people someone will be assigned to the role.
We rise with the sun. Punctuality is required. If your real goal is to party and travel for free; Don't come. We will not help rich travelers abuse people in this impoverished area. No smoking or flakes. Though it is in our interests to have longer term participants, we agree to one week as a trial period. If you are coming from far away and would a longer stay is an option, we can arrange an online video interview with Brian after your application is received.
Wood fired sauna. Solar ovens. Food dehydrator. There are 5 friendly dogs here, one cat, and about 20 chickens. Lots of wildlife. Fires at night. Circus toys. Lots to do for work and play.
Fluency in English or Spanish is required. Bilingual preferred. Gay friendly. No drugs. Moderate alcohol consumption is fine.
The variety of projects allows all of our volunteers to learn during work, and long term volunteers are able to take leadership roles within particular projects of interest.
We seek longer term residents: Hosts to manage various spaces, photographers and videographers, activity leaders, video editor, Spanish teacher, English teacher, yoga teacher etc.
Outside of working hours volunteers participate in a variety of activities available. We have a large library with over 3,000 books. Our facilities include a sauna, an archery range, volleyball court, many crafts, and plenty of trails for exploring. Both visitors and volunteers enjoy playing with the juggling equipment, circus toys, carving tools, and art supplies. Campfire each night seasonally.
Housing: We can lend tents and blankets to stay in. Sometimes we have cabins with a bed and bedding for volunteers.
Most housing has no electricity, and there generally is no electricity except LED lights at night in shared buildings.
To keep clean, we fire up the sauna once a week for spa day.
We will send more information about our place so you can see if it is right for you. For applicants considering long term positions beyond the one week trial period, we will set up a time to chat on the phone or on Skype to try to determine compatibility.
