We are a small friendly hostel in San Luis Obispo, California. We are near the coast, and halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. We provide lodging for 24 guests from all around the world. We have four staff members who participate in the work exchange.
For new volunteers, the work consists mainly of cleaning the hostel, but it is light cleaning since we do it each day. We usually train volunteers on the morning pancake shift (staff favorite) after they have done the cleaning shift for a few weeks.
We require 20 hours of work each week (usually 5 shifts, 4 hours per shift) in exchange for a bed in a dormitory and some food such as rice, beans, lentils, quinoa, eggs, oatmeal, sourdough pancakes, and coffee.
Because our facility is small, we cannot host children, pets, and most of the time we can not accept more than one new person at a time. We usually accept volunteers that can stay for at least a month, but in some rare cases we’ll accept 2 weeks.
The hostel is in a quiet residential neighborhood just a short walk to downtown. San Luis Obispo has abundant outdoor recreational opportunities. Hiking trails and cycling trails are nearby, and the ocean is 10 miles away. Transportation to San Luis Obispo is via Amtrak (2 minutes from the hostel) or the airport (SBP) which is 3.5 miles from the hostel. All corners of San Luis Obispo are accessible on local buses.
If you feel that you would be a good match for the hostel, then I would love to discuss this further.
