About Our Farm

The Farm: Our farm is entirely off grid (some cellphone signal with verizon), self-sustaining for energy, water, and at times food. The mission is to take this valley from a raw deforested state of past abuses to a balanced and fully closed loop system. Currently we sit in a vast and open space with loads of pasture along with amazing views. Mountainous topography (well nc mountains) at a comfortable 3,500 feet above sea level. Approximately 75% is pasture which is managed using a rotationally grazing system with Scottish highland cattle, donkeys pals, and 8 dairy goats. Other animals/friends are 3 horses, 25 chickens and 12 Guinea fowl and 5 ducks. The springs here are popping out of the landscape creating a creek in the bottom down into the woods, which is a beautiful refreshing escape outside the open pastures.

Who we are: Jonny and Kalin Allen.

Jonny has been working our farm for the past 5 years listening and observing the landscape. He has taken the scottish highland cattle and learned inside and out on managing these beautiful beast on the steeps slopes of this area to restore soil back. Goats, Chickens, Donkeys and other animals have followed. His dream is to forest much of the pastures with nut and fruit with a lush understory and annual terraces. Permaculture practices are a focus and applied when possible. Jonny is also full time on the farm and will mainly manage and lead the wwoof team.

Kalin has been working with herbs and holistic practices for over 5 years with and education in the arts and passion for vegan and raw foods. Many people have found new life in Kalin’s recommendations for health, body and soul. She has thrown farm to table events in the past couple of years and hopes to do the same on our farm in the future. The small greenhouse attached to the cabin and the garden are two of her favorite places on the farm. Kalin is also part time on the farm and will take part in many projects.

Welcome to our farm!

Searching For: Like minded people who will want and enjoy contributing to the farms purpose. People who are not afraid of some good ol manual labor, work hard and rest well. Things are simple here so you will need to be able to detach from the digital world a bit. Internet is limited and there is no AC electricity. You will be required to prepare your own food for the most part, so please only request a stay if you are able to cook for your self here. We would love someone or a couple with a camper or tiny house! If camping, experienced campers only, we do not have an alternative space for you to stay currently.

Location: In the most northwestern county of North Carolina aka the “coolest corner of NC”. Blue ridge parkway is 15 minutes away, Appalachian Mountains all around. towns of Jefferson and West Jefferson are 10 minutes away, and ASU App State University in Boone only 25 miles. If you enjoy rivers, the New River is a few minutes away with trout. In North Carolina on the border of Virginia and Tennessee.

Housing: Will be your camper, tiny house or tent. We have amazing spots to park. You will love the spots we have chosen. There currently is no dc electricity or running water at these spots, but water could easily be setup soon after you arrive, and electricity is accessible at the main cabin on the high-line road. Building a camping platform for our tents will be an option.

5 days or less a week of work. minimum 5 hours in those days. Some days could be longer which would allow more days of rest for you ?? Grab a snack early in the am work, have larger brunch to then continue the days.

Driving: Aim for Jefferson NC 28640 and you are quite close
Flying: CLT / GSO and there is a bus you can take to Boone that’s quite affordable. I can pick you up in boone. Google Mountaineer to/from Boone NC
Walking/Cycling/Hitchhiking: Cool! Just be sure you’ve been confirmed.

Jonny and Kalin – Stacking life between two locust trees!

Rules & Criteria
->Here on the farm we need individuals who are willing to take instruction and physically able to move stone, drive fence post, feel comfortable around large animals, does not mind getting dirt/mud/manure on them, has faith and drive to complete everyday and be ready for the next. We need carpenters, stone mason, and timberframers. There is a cabin being built soon and lots of ground work to start. A master stone mason will be assisting us here on the farm, so a great opportunity to learn an invaluable art form! You also of course will need to be aware of your body and be present.

->You will be working 5 days a week for 5 hours a day. More hours could be placed into a single day so that you will have more than 2 days off. Pantry provided in your creating and maintaining. We will purchase foods needed and you will cook most for yourself. So please love to cook!

The water at the cabin on the high-line is finite so hot showers are limited to 2 a week! A creek is in the bottom of the valley located in the woods if you’d like to bathe in there.

(spring/summer/fall) Bring large hat to keep sun off of face, many people dont realize how much sun you can get on the farm!

(winter)Bring a warm sleeping bag, pillow, gloves (work and snow gloves), warm hat, boots (rainboots if you have them), and your own coffee/tea mug/cup (nice to have if you want to).

(spring/summer/fall)A bicycle is also recommended to bring (fat tires only, alot of gravel roads)

When its the winter and it is quite cold up here, the wind will bring the chill down quite a bit so please come prepared and have yourself an under second skin layer (top and bottom), warm second layer, and a windproof top.

Care for others as you care for yourself or in a better way.

Remember we are all on this journey through life together with all living beings.

Live, laugh, love.
