This farm is a developing farm on the Awehi Stream in Hilo, Hawaii. It is 3.5 miles from Hilo town and is at 1500 foot elevation, so nights are cool! Bring a light jacket. During rainy season, you will need a rain coat. On clear days, views of Hilo bay are spectacular. The cabin is completely off grid and power is via solar. There is water catchment and a composting toilet. Cooking is done via a propane stove and oven. The rock wall enclosed shower is heated! Do not worry, we will teach you how to use everything! However, Wi-fi is NOT available. You will have to have your own cell plan that gives you wifi.
The work you will be doing is feeding animals, mulching, weeding, preparing garden beds, planting, painting and other light building activities and perhaps you can share your experience and knowledge to help us make the farm a healthy and happy place! We will supply all tools, gloves and materials. We ask for 15/hours a week. Minimum stay is two weeks. You will be responsible for your own meals. There is a large fridge, propane stove and sink.
We do not live on the farm and you will only see us during weekend work times, which will usually be 9 am to 4 pm or we can schedule it for other hours, as long as 15 hours/week/person.
You will have to rent your own vehicle to get to the farm and get around the Big Island. Getting to the farm is relatively easy. The road is gravel for the last 2 miles. The neighbors do not have special vehicles to drive up, so you will not need 4 wheel drive (unless you plan on going to Mauna Kea). Everything is very close. The downtown post office and grocery stores are only 15 minutes down the hill.
The farm has goats, chickens, ducks, cats, a cow and a dog.
The farm is drug free and smoke free. Mahalo!
