ATTENTION all yogis, vegans, free-thinkers, social justice warriors, and beautiful conscious beings! We are nearing the end of building a very unique earthen yoga centre on 5 acres of beautiful parklike acreage in south Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. It is a work of art. We have a goal in the future to host various retreats and seminars about conscious living and nurturing a yogic and socially just life. We are vegan and believe in a sustainable and compassionate world for all beings. We also nurture a large organic vegetable garden and maintain beautiful surroundings.

Leila is a high school math and social justice teacher and Regis is an IT professional for a group of first nations tribes. Both of us are trained yoga instructors. We share our home with 2 beautiful and loving cats who are a large part of our family.

Our accommodations are modest. We have a big cabin tent on the property for helpers which has separate private sleeping sections and a common central living room area with carpet a lounge chair, ottoman and table area. It's truly luxury tenting. We also have a small room with a bed in the house for one person if preferred. Comfortable beds, electricity and WiFi are available in the tent. There is a full bathroom and kitchen in the yoga centre for your use as well as a hang out common area in the earthen centre. Keeping the shared common areas clean and tidy will be expected. Most summers, Leila sets up a 'red tent' for lounging in and to escape into another world - the cats are known to also enjoy this colourful and exotic sanctuary.

There is always work to do in terms of gardening, property maintenance, cleaning, painting, small repairs, organizing, gardening, harvesting or participating in a project that will enhance the property and its efficiency. Our main focus is getting the yoga centre up and running. You must be comfortable working outside or inside with your hands, and it would be nice if you brought appropriate clothing and footwear to do some light-medium dusty/dirty manual labour.

We live in a rural area and there is no public transportation to town. We live in between two towns, Nanaimo and Ladysmith both are 12 min away by car. We live near hiking trails, the ocean and the pristine Nanaimo river is 5 min. away which we love to swim in during the summer. We also have an above ground pool for everyone's enjoyment.

Leila will prepare 4-5 wholesome, 3 course meals per week (sometimes it's mid-day, sometimes in the evening) and we will also provide you with groceries for other meals. For all other personal food needs, you can purchase items at a nearby grocery store. There are usually fabulous leftovers on days she doesn't cook. Since we are vegan, we ask that no animal products be consumed on or be brought to the property. Leila is a fabulous vegan cook and loves to share her creations with the community. You'll be utterly amazed at how satisfying and delicious vegan meals can be. Helping with kitchen clean-up would be a nice gesture.

We would expect you to put in an honest 4-5 hours of work a day with one day off. We are flexible if you want to put more hours in a day and take two days off per week. Much of the work will be solo, other times, you may have some company depending on our schedules and whoever else is staying here. We juggle many things in our lives so unfortunately, we cannot be a tour guide in our region. We are happy to guide you in the right direction though and give you information about local interests. When appropriate, we will invite you to join us if we go on an outing.

We are interested in those who want to be a part of creating a conscious community and who resonate with the concept of selfless service (karma yoga). A mutually reciprocal relationship based on compassionate communication and meeting each others needs is an ideal we strive to nurture here. We celebrate diversity and value multiculturalism. We won't tolerate drug use, dishonesty, or selfishness. We tend to live simply and expect guests to respect our need for a predominantly quiet environment -no loud music, or partying. We need a lot of down time, so if you are the type who needs the stimulation of people around all the time, this may not be the ideal atmosphere for you. Persons who enjoy solitude are best suited for our place as you may be working alone.

We are independent-free thinkers who believe in a world based on communal values. Those who desire to delve into the depths of the mind and of yoga philosophy beyond the trendy version of western yoga will find this an unforgettable place to contribute to. You can learn about vegan cooking, animal rights, organic gardening, yoga philosophy and postures, social justice, computers and IT, and immerse yourself in a west coast lifestyle. We look forward to learning new things from you too. We were both elite athletes and coached sports (cycling and swimming) in our past so we have a variety of life experiences to draw on. We are trying to balance a meaningful, healthy and ethical life but are not is a process of sharing our strengths, eliminating our poor habits and endeavouring to be a better person every day. We like to spend time just talking about life and sharing the human condition, yet we can be known to watch a movie, a silly show on tv or be on our computers. We have three acoustic guitars, a bass guitar, hand drums, and fun percussion items for music making. In short, we are regular folk and we are not. :)

om shanti, Leila & Regis
