We are a late 30's couple with a toddler living on our organic, ecological, off-grid homestead in Mendocino County, Northern California. Our location is in the forest 35 minutes away from the town of Ukiah, along an unpaved road. A volunteer would be best to have their own vehicle, or at least be prepared for periods of solitude and off-grid self entertainment.

The primary help we are seeking is with construction of our house. We will be utilizing some natural building techniques including strawbale, earth plaster / adobe, and home-milled timber framing. The ideal volunteer will be physically fit and able to lift heavy objects, with interest in natural construction and better yet experience in carpentry or other home repair trades. We also regularly need help with organic farm chores and infrastructure maintenance. The schedule will vary from just an hour, to long summer 8+ hr work days, to consecutive days off, all consistent with Helpx guidelines of 20-25 hours per week.

We offer a private sleeping area (a converted van!), and semi-private kitchen and relaxation area in a large tent carport. You also have access to a beautiful bath house shared with us. These areas are slightly removed from our personal living zone and offer plenty of privacy. We will supply you at a minimum with organic garden fruits and vegetables, eggs from our chickens, and some basic provisions that we purchase such as grains and seasonings. We do love to cook as well, and will invite you or prepare for you most dinners, and many lunches and snacks. We love to cook in our solar oven all summer.

Our homestead is super tranquil, with great options for listening to sounds of the forest, relaxing in a hammock in the shade, and even enjoying an evening soak at Irie Springs, our solar hot tub on a hill! With a view! We occasionally invite a few friends to socialize around the campfire, or we may invite you on trips to the ocean or to a reggae show.

Seth is an avid gardener, carpenter, and surfer, fluent in Spanish. Dandelion is an herbalist and medicine maker. We both love food experimentation, world travel, music and dancing, and our two friendly dogs, Chico and Yuri. We just added a new family member, our baby daughter Lilikoi, so help is especially needed this spring and summer!

Update summer 2019:

We're looking for a volunteer/ apprentice to help complete the earthen plasters on our owner built strawbale and hybrid house, located near Ukiah, California. We have close to 1000 sq ft of interior walls of which approximately 10% need base plaster and 100% will need finish plasters. We also intend to build kitchen cabinetry from scratch this summer. Hone your carpentry skills! This is an opportunity for a dedicated, patient, detail oriented person to learn and practice in a relaxed environment. Physical fitness and commitment are the primary requirements. The site is a slightly remote rural property, where on site residence is best. We offer hospitality in a remote natural setting : glampsite, organic produce, some meals; in exchange. This opportunity is available immediately (August 2019) and is expected to last all summer. Please contact us or forward this to interested individuals.
