Thank you for your interest in volunteering this summer
Here is some general infomation about the placement and answers some frequently asked questions. Please read carefully!
i would be keen to talk about the placement through skype.
We run a small popular canoeing and kayaking centre run from my small farm. The farm is 15 mins from Oliveira do Hospital and 20 mins from Tabua and the river Mondego in Central Portugal.
As a team, we prepare canoes and kayaks for day trips and multi day kayak camping trips. The journeys are self guided so our work is mainly preparing boats and equipment, transporting them to the river and picking up canoeists from a meeting point in Tabua where they leave their cars. We brief and instruct the groups at the river and meet them at the finish point.
The most important aspect of volunteering is that clients are met with friendly and professional people at the beginning and end of their canoe trip. A mobile phone is provided with the vehicles as well as rock and river staff t-shirts.
Four volunteers are taken on during the summer months. This way work can be divided between the volunteers and makes for a sociable environment.
I rent out a space to holiday makers. Volunteers are also involved in preparing the space for holiday makers and meeting and greeting guests and assisting them during their their stay.
If helping on the farm, volunteers are given tasks to help with the garden. Normally this is a little bit of planting, weeding, watering and generally looking after the growing and garden areas.
Our typical schedule is preparing guest house and general garden work is given to volunteers to divide between themselves. I like volunteers who are able to be part of a team to plan their days between them.
Living conditions and general info:
I am English and have been living in Portugal for 10 years
I hope to provide a relaxed environment where volunteers can help and relax.
The accommodation space is very comfortable. Volunteers have use of a basic kitchen kitchen. There are no set meal times, but we plan and prepare meals together.
All food is provided by me.
If volunteers wish for extra items and alcohol they will have opportunities to buy at local supermarkets
There is a bbq area and areas on the farm to relax.
There is WIFI!! It is limited to 100 GB each month so volunteers who are looking to get offline, without loosing complete contact online are preferred
The rock and river vehicles that volunteers will use for client collection is used only for work purposes only
There will be opportunities to kayak and also to participate in a volunteer only kayak camping expedition.
Volunteers can take the bus to Tabua or Oliveira do hospital where I will collect them.
Information on bus timetables can be found on our website contacts page. Our facebook page is also a good place to visit, as it has photos of day to day operations and photos of past volunteers.
It is really important that volunteers have a clear idea of the living arrangements and work duties before they come.
If at all possible I would really like to set up a skype conversation to ask a few questions and answer yours
The idea is that volunteers have a fantastic time here and enjoy their stay.
IMPORTANT: This placement is popular! many people contact me to volunteer. When volunteers have emailed me their proposed travel plans and arrival and departure times i will send confirmation of the placement. Please do not assume you have a place until I have confirmed it.
I would very much like a SKYPE chat with you
please ask any questions to ensure that this placement is right for you.
