WE are now looking for a helpful couple or 2 friends who would like to give us a bit of a hand in August - mostly simple garden work, tidying up and helping with our watering routine in the early morning. Because of the summer heat, we would only be asking for a couple of hours help per day in the garden... and in exchange we would provide nice accommodation, a big breakfast and use of the outdoor kitchen for self catering (you provide your own food for lunch and dinner...). This would suit people wishing to explore the beaches and countryside of the Algarve, your own car would be helpful, but not essential as there is a good local bus and train service from Loule.
Please note, this is a special request for help in August only, hence a different exchange is offered than the one in our normal listing below.
In exchange for 4 hours help a day, 5 days a week, we offer a pleasant room with shower and good vegan food. As part of the daily routine, guests help us keep the house and garden generally clean and tidy.

Our old farmhouse and 'wilderness' garden is situated in the countryside close to the market town of Loule.
In springtime, after the rainy season, walls need whitewashing, the garden needs weeding (even though we are trying to create a maintenance free garden!) and there is painting and cleaning up to do, inside and out.
Summers are hot and dry and the garden is dormant, so we rarely have helpers at that time, we start to harvest almonds and figs towards the end of August.
In October comes the olive harvest and as temperatures cool along with the first rains, everything starts to grow again. At this time of year we need help in the garden with pruning, transplanting, mulching, tree planting organising compost piles and occasional bonfires. We make sure that our winter wood supply is ready and that the house is prepared for the rainy season.

The garden is a work in progress and has been created with much love by a flow of helpxers over the past 5 or more years. We are constantly amazed how much there is to learn and we experiment with the traditional local ways of growing our own food, whilst being inspired by permaculture principles and a desire to live lightly and respectfully. We enjoy sharing what we have learned and receiving input from others with gardening experience.

Life at Wilderness suits people interested in a simple way of life and getting to know the Algarve on days off. We are well located (15 mins from beaches - bus service from Loule, 25 minutes from Faro airport) and close to trains and buses for trips further afield. We have a very friendly dog who loves to go on walks in the surrounding country side. We offer guests the use of our bicycles to explore locally. We also provide the odd lift into Loule and help with planning days off and suggestions for places to visit. When possible we take trips together to explore places that might be harder to find without local knowledge and transport.

We would also be interested in hosting helpers travelling with their own accommodation and transport...we have a lovely field with almond and olive trees and a distant view of the sea....ideal for an independent minded couple to set up a temporary base. We could discuss work and meals etc and come up with an arrangement which suited us all.
