Greetings, traveler! We are a 34-acre, privately owned oasis of oak and pine forest, savanna, and native prairie among a rolling sea of fields in northeast Iowa, four miles from the picturesque town of Le Claire on the banks of the Mississippi. All manner of Midwest birds, bees, butterflies, and wildlife make their homes on our land.

Our guiding vision is to restore, regenerate, and heal ourselves, our community, and the land, learning from the wisdom embedded within the native ecology. Every day we strive to realize through action what Aldo Leopold called the “Land Ethic,” which “simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively: the land.” We are dedicated to restoring and preserving this native habitat, and looking for folks to come help us in our mission.

“We” are Tony and Joyce, owners who enjoy meeting new people and making them feel welcome.

We’re looking for folks enthusiastic about doing conservation work. Conservation is a romantic notion that is much dirtier, sweatier, and more tedious in reality — yet it is noble and worthwhile, and deeply connecting. Some of our ongoing projects include clearing out invasive plants and trees, planting new trees, mowing, renovation/construction of a community workshop cabin, and maintaining the vegetable/flower gardens and fruit orchard. Experience with brush clearing, trail building and maintenance, woodland and chainsaw work, prairie management, construction, small machinery (tractor, mowers), garden management, canning/preserving/drying, animal care (chickens), or permaculture is a bonus!

We provide private room accommodations at our guest house, which has a fully equiped shared kitchen, bathroom, shower and living room. We also have campsites on the property and can provide tents for those who wish to camp instead.

In exchange for working 32 hours per week (4 weekdays for 6 hours and Saturday for 8 hours), we’ll also provide food staples, fresh eggs and produce from the garden. Lunch and dinners will be up to you. We’ll begin our day with a morning breakfast meeting before setting off on our projects. On select days you will be invited to have supper with the family.

There will be plenty of time during your stay for canoeing in the ponds, wandering about in the woods, and AMAZING birdwatching (and beewatching — we have several honeybee hives overlooking the prairie). Every Friday we host a meditation in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh.

The nearby town of Le Claire is a cute old American river town with several antique stores and cafes, a riverboat tour, and festivals throughout the year ( The Quad Cities, which is about 15 miles away, offer a wide range of cultural events and festivals, and boast a terrific library system, museums, and farmers markets. Bike trails wind throughout, on both the Iowa and Illinois sides of the river.

We are looking for folks with a positive attitude, strong work ethic, flexibility, and an eagerness to share your life and culture with us as we share ours with you. Please have insurance and be able to provide at least two references.
**NO drugs or tobacco are allowed here. Alcohol is allowed SOLELY at our discretion, as with the occasional dinner or special occasion.**

Time commitment: 32 hours of work per week (Including 8 hours on Saturday) and a minimum one week stay.
Let us know your dietary needs. Also, tell us whether you have a vehicle or will need to be picked up at the train station (Galesburg or Princeton, IL), Megabus station (Moline, IL) or Quad Cities airport (MLI).

Any other questions, feel free to ask!
