We are a small organic farm located in the mountains of Western Maine. Our goal is to create a self sufficient homestead. We heat and power our home with solar. We have a family sized organic garden, a variety of berries, and a large orchard consisting of many different types of apples, plums, pears, and cherries. We have a dairy cow who is due to calve in the spring, two fiber sheep, two dairy goats and their kids, several dozen free ranging laying hens, and a hive of bees. In the summer, we pasture raise meat chickens.
Work varies depending on the season: pruning, planting, weeding, harvesting, and preserving. Regardless of the time of year, we always have barn chores and animals to love. We bake bread, make our own yogurt, as well as make hard and soft cheeses. If you are interested, there are also opportunities to work with fiber from our sheep. Long term projects could include constructing raised beds, building a high tunnel hoop house, planting a kitchen herb garden, planting a natural dye garden, constructing an outdoor bread oven, renovating a shed into a sleeping cabin, siding the barn, and more! We are happy to teach you new skills.
Accommodations are either a bedroom in our house or during the warmer months tenting on our property with access to showers and bathroom in the house. We eat family style meals with vegetables from our garden, our own cheese and yogurt, home baked breads, our own chicken, or locally grown meats. We can also offer vegetarian meals. We try to do most of our cooking with locally sourced organic ingredients. We have two dogs and two cats, so unfortunately bringing your own pets would not work well for us. Our farm is located six miles from the small town of Bethel. We have acouple of bikes available for exploring the local area. We are a short distance from the White Mountain National Forest where you will find beautiful hiking trails and swimming holes.
Absolutely no smoking or drugs. Minimal social drinking.
We expect volunteers to contribute to household chores, cooking and dishes in addition to farm work.
