Thank you for your interest in our listing!
This is a small farm of about 50 acres in a beautiful area of southern Norway, right next to Hardangarvidda National Park. We're surrounded by rolling mountains, flowing streams, and majestic pine trees and, at 600m above sea level, beautiful fresh air. From our home, only one other little building is visible, and you can't even see a single road! The nearest village - which is tiny - is 6.5km away, and the nearest town - which is also tiny! - is about 15km away.
We're a family of four farmers: Martin from England, Hege from Norway, Tarn (3 years old) and Imre (7 months), and a few years ago we bought this farm, which had been abandoned for the last 35 years. Together with the wonderful volunteers that we've already had from various places around the world, we've already done lots of work to bring this Farm back to its former glory, but as you can imagine, there's still lots more to do! We've got old buildings to repair; some goats, sheep, and chickens to care for; snow to clear in winter and wood to chop the rest of the year; things to be cleaned and things to be cleared; things to be painted and things to be shifted; fencing, building, gardening, cooking, picking… and the list goes on! We try not only to give our volunteers jobs which they are good at, but also jobs which they will enjoy and which will add to their experience at the Farm.
We like to offer our volunteers an "immersive experience" - we share our lives with you and really try to welcome everyone as a member of the family, not as "unpaid employees". We like to think that this will give you a genuine "Norwegian experience", but it also means that some days can be quite long: this is not the kind of place where you work your 4 hours and stop what you're doing right there. Given this, communication is really important: if you need a bit of time off, please tell us and we can work something out! When you're not working, we would love you to discover what really makes Norway special: there are some great hiking (and even camping!) opportunities in Hardangarvidda and in our local valley which start right on our doorstep; there are great photo opportunities nearly everywhere you go; or if you'd prefer, just sit back and enjoy the beautiful colour display which Mother Nature treats us to all day, every day!
We have a cute little cabin for our volunteers to stay in where you can have some space when you feel that you need it, but we also invite you to join us for meals so that we can have a bit of a chat and get to know each other. Before that though, because we believe in the importance of communication, we like to have a bit of a Skype chat with anyone who would like to come and join us here, just so that we can get a bit of a feel for each other.
