First: Please read ALL of our listing before contacting us!
We need helpxers between MAY and SEPTEMBR at these properties to help us do basic property maintenance, spring cleaning and gardening. It's quite hard work, so if you're a bit idle, please don't apply. The rest of the year we spend travelling int he UK and abroad.
We are a young-at-heart, well-travelled couple who own two holiday cottages. One is in the countryside in SOMERSET (rural, but not isolated). The other is at the sea-side in lovely West Mersea, ESSEX. Make sure you know which one you are coming to as they're hundreds of kms apart!
Julie is a professional horse trainer (www.equitationsciencetraining.net)
We absolutely love hosting and to have good company while we are keeping these properties tidy, and you are welcome to join us in either property if you have RELEVANT experience (either property maintenance, cleaning or gardening).
A caravan renovator/handyman or mechanic would be so welcome too!
To see what these lovely homes look like and offer in terms of comfort, please see the websites above - there are plenty of photos of the accommodation here (they are our Airbnb listings).
We prefer to host couples who are sociable but also somewhat independent. We would also welcome a solo traveller if we feel we will click.
We welcome active, working guests to help just 5 hours a day, in the morning. 5 days work = 2 days holiday afterwards. We start work by 9am and work a full 5 hours (with a tea break), then you are free to relax, enjoy and explore these lovely villages/areas.
ABOUT US: We are a cheerful couple who love each other, love to host, love to get the work done, love to make progress, to eat good food and have a look around the area with you, if we have time.
We are experienced, kind, generous, 5* hosts who will really make your stay memorable and fun. We are also volunteers, when we travel, so we know how to create a good experience.
We are very active - we love walking, running, yoga, travelling, road trips, and so on. We especially love a good laugh and meeting new, fun people. We hope to be inspired by your lives and we hope you will be inspired by ours!
We appreciate that you are working for us and we will host you very well in exchange.
YOUR QUALITIES: WILLING to work 5 hours a day, competent, cheerful people who respect the exchange and are considerate of our home and stuff.
ACCOMMODATION: Both holiday cottages are bright, airy, cosy, comfy, clean, tidy and well-equipped. You will not rough it here, and you will never be cold or hungry! You can feel at home here, and relax and explore the area.
NOTE: There's NO WIFI at either cottage, but you can use your phone data to tether to your other device - that's what we do and it works fine. Or use the library, pub or cafe wifi for free!
The Somerset house is on the edge of a lovely village in a beautiful rural area of South Somerset.
At either cottage you get excellent private accommodation in your own double bedroom, or a lovely caravan for more privacy - as you choose. All bedrooms are lovely and have comfy beds, great mattresses, nice, freshly laundered bedding, duvets and good pillows.
The cute caravan (Somerset cottage only) has a big double or two single beds and it`s in our pretty garden, under a massive walnut tree, overlooking open fields. It has electricity and heating. We also have an outdoor fire-pit in Somerset!
THE AREA: The Somerset home is rural, but not isolated. The Essex property is in a pleasant, small coastal town, a few minutes' walk from the beach. Both places are really lovely.
Here's a bit of information about Somerset: A real slice of old England. There are lanes, meadows and tracks all around for walking, running and cycling. Close to us there are stunning historic villages, a fantastic ancient cider farm, great local pubs and award-winning, unique cafes, historic mansions and gardens, Cheddar Gorge, the fabulous Roman city of Bath, and the world famous Glastonbury town.
THE DEAL: We ask helpers to come for 1 week (7 days), and to do just FIVE hours a day, 5 days on = 2 days holiday afterwards. STARTING BY 9am, plus a bit of extra help with every meal.
In return we give you a warm welcome, great accommodation, your balance of privacy/social time, local information, outings if we have time, and we provide plentiful, tasty, vegetarian meals too.
THE VIBE: Quietly busy, informal, relaxed, happy and fun atmosphere. We work from home so we are often occupied, so sometimes you will be working on your own, but we are there if you need us! We have good tools for every job, gloves, etc.
THE FOOD/SMOKING: This is a completely non-smoking, vegetarian household. All meals are wholesome, delicious, prepared from scratch, and generous.
Please do not bring cigarettes, vapes, meat or fish of any kind to our home. Of course, no drugs. Please provide your own alcohol.
If you need a meat fix then please sample the superb award-winning village cafes in each village. There's also a brilliant gastro-pub in the Somerset village!
