We are a group of parents of a public elementary school in Italy. Our aim is to improve the knowledge of English of the school children. The lessons will be offered free of charge so that even financially disadvantaged children can take part. That's why we look for volunteers.
Having received the approval of the Director of studies, we’re now looking for ENGLISH NATIVE SPEAKERS to volunteer to teach English to students aged 6-13.
We're looking for a person with a teacher degree or experience in teaching English. Don't' worry if you don't speak Italian, that's perfectly fine.
Volunteering time will be from 16,30 to 18,00 from Monday to Friday and on Saturday morning from 25th September on during school time until 07th June. Minimum stay is 4 weeks during the above mentioned time. You might be asked to give some lessons also to the members of the family that will host you.
The Exchange: In exchange for the work as an English teacher at the school, you will stay with the families of the students and receive meals. As accommodation you might get a single room or share the room with the daughter or son of the family hosting you.
One or two parents will also be present when you teach at school and will intervene in case children don’t behave properly.
•To open up children from different ages and levels to listen English from a Native speaker
•To teach trough games, music, videos, images and songs (no standard lessons, the project's name is "Play with English" and is held after school time)
•To show connections between the different material shown in class
•To have a good time while at the same time they learn
What to expect at school:
The classroom is big and has plenty of space to hold the children’s activities … sitting down, playing, running, etc.
The classroom has a projector and internet connection with good sound system
There is a paper board with markers available
Photocopies can be done in the second floor of the school through a USB on a PDF file
There is a screen that can be connected to a computer or a tablet
There is a set of speakers
What to Expect at home: Some parents have a higher level of English than others. If you do not speak Italian, please tell it in advance so then you will stay with a family that speaks some English. Also let us know whether you have special requirements in terms of diet so that we can organize it for you.
You might have a different host family every week. Some host families will probably show you around some of the nearby towns and cities.
We welcome you to our project and look forward to sharing this experience with you. We ask you, if you decide to join us, please stay committed until your arrival. As you can imagine there is a lot of administration involved and we prefer not to disappoint the children. We are a profession volunteer association and we follow standard procedure in Italy, where we need to provide details of your passport. This can be done before you arrive or on arrival.
You are free to go around by yourself in your free time using public services: in San Pietro in Casale there is a train station and you can reach Bologna or Ferrara in about 15 minutes, Venice or Florence in about 90 minutes and also go to the seaside for a daily excursion on a Saturday or Sunday.
Length of Stay: Minimum 4 weeks but we prefer longer periods up to 2 months.
About the Area: The school is located in a small village called Maccaretolo. The nearest city is San Pietro in Casale (also quite small, about 12.000 in habitants including the surrounding areas). San Pietro in Casale is ideally located between Bologna and Ferrara (about 25km from each of the two cities)
Smoking/Drinking: Throughout your stay, you will only be allowed to drink alcohol in strict moderation. During your time at school and in families' houses, you are not allowed to smoke.
Pictures: in Italian public schools it is forbidden to take pictures of the children without special permit.
