My tree nursery is located 120km west of Edmonton and only a 2.5 hour drive away from famous Jasper National Park in the Rocky Mountains. There are 3 members to our household: Pat, his girlfriend Anita and our kind old friend Froggy.
We need help with stapling, tying and crimping the trees we dug, digging and planting seedlings, caring for the trees in our nursery and you might help with tree planting and landscaping jobs all over Alberta. In spring we sometimes go as far as BC to dig trees. Tree care means pruning, fertilizing, parasite and weed control. Working here also includes renovating and building projects, i.e. fencing, painting or carpentry. There are a beautifully landscaped yard and rock gardens to look after and some fruit picking in summer. During the colder months one of our helpers is usually in charge of the daily horse chores. As we are all living together we share the household work. The tree business is seasonal - weather permitting we might start as early as the end of March and work until the end of November.
In winter we train our foals and brake young horses to ride. If you would like to help with this you need to have experience with horses and have to be a good rider already.
You can stay with us in a big rustic log house where we have 4 bedrooms with queen size beds or bunk beds and 2 bathrooms for our workers and guests. There is also a separate western style bunk house with bunk beds, a kitchen and a bathroom. Our place is surrounded by beautiful nature where you can go jogging, play ball games, throw horse shoes and check out our large pond for swimming and fishing. Inside there is a big fireplace, a billiard table, game computers, darts, a jukebox, laundry facilities, a beautiful rustic saloon, your own tvs in your bedrooms, a big movie collection, a dvd player for all helpers in the common room and very limited wireless internet. We like to eat well and serve also vegetarian food. There is no need to bring anything special for your stay here, we can provide you with work clothes and riding outfits. We have rain gear in many sizes but our helpers sometimes do not take good care of it so you might choose to bring your own to make sure you stay dry. If you feel like fixing yourself up one of our bicycles you can use them as well, there are nice trails around.
We have 2 dogs, 3 farm cats and more than 5 horses, all of them very friendly. There are usually foals around.
This is a great place to practice your English and make friends with other workers from all over the world as well as with frequently visiting Canadians.
You are always welcome to share our activities after work, like sitting outside at the fire, playing Poker and other games, watching movies or come with us to Edmonton when we have to make a trip there.
Sometimes helpers like to cook a meal for all of us and we get to try international foods.
During the hottest time in summer we might take you on a camping or boating trip. We also camp at our pond.
Our volunteers have learnt many different skills while they were here, such as improving their English, horse training, animal care, carpentry, welding, operating equipment, recognizing trees and wild plants and a lot more.
We have very much to offer to you. In exchange we expect you to put in an average of 6 hours a day, 6 days a week. Farm work can be hard at times but then it also is fun with plenty of different experiences and nice people to work with.
We expect our helpers to try their best to speak English while here but we can help out with German-English translations.
Please feel free to contact us and ask any questions.
Helpers with mechanical or welding skills are needed at any time.
