Hello, my name is Ahmed and I live and work near to the village of Tagounite in the south of Morocco. I have a house and some land which has a lot of potential, and I seek volunteers to help me realise this potential. There are established date palms, and if we work to clean the well, maintain the irrigation system and work the land we can grow other crops and vegetables. Part of the house is restored, other parts need renovating, hopefully to create a hostel or guest house. I also welcome you to see something of traditional life here in the south of Morocco.

The house is located about half an hour by foot from Tagounite, between Tagounite and the desert.

Detail of the work:
Depending on the time of year help needed might involve harvesting the date fruits, tidying up the palm trees by removing dead leaves and all year round the trees require watering with our traditional irrigation system.

The irrigation system also needs to be maintained, kept clear of the sand and debris which sometimes blows in from the Sahara! We are also trying to extend the irrigation system so that more land can be used to grow things.

Vegetables can be grown in Autumn, winter and spring when the temperature is not too high.

Our house is a traditional mud and straw house, which has been partially restored. There is still much to be done on the house, including maintaining the reconstructed parts, so we would also be very happy for your help with this. This involves simple traditional building techniques, such as making mud bricks to build walls or creating sheets of canes to construct the roof.

This is a big job and this is why we need your help, to make something good out of this land, see what is possible in these difficult conditions and share it with other people. No previous experience is necessary, we will show you all you need to know to help us. But any expertise in gardening or permaculture would be appreciated. We also want to learn from you.

You can also help with more everyday tasks like tidying the house, washing up and cooking. Or if you have any other skills or interests we will try to find a way to use them.

Volunteers should expect to help around 3 hours per day, 15 hours per week, depending on the season. volunteers should be aware that during the summer, June to August, it is very hot, up to 50 degrees.

Because our project is new and resources are scarce we need to ask for a small contribution for food, water and electricity of 40 dihrams, which is about 4 euros per day, to make our project possible.

We want to learn from you and hope to teach you something about the traditional simple life here near the desert. You will see how we live with little water, how we bake bread, prepare food and entertain ourselves. Sometimes we play gnawa music together in the evening! We want to share our daily lives and culture with you.

To reach Tagounite, take the ctm bus from Marrakech, which leaves at around 11am, arriving Tagounite at around 20:30. There is also a night bus from Agadir to Tagounite.

If you have any questions about our project or need more information please get in touch!
