We are a year-round home of spiritual renewal nestled in the serene North Woods of Michigan. We are looking for hearty souls to join us for an experience you won’t soon forget! Opportunities are available serving in the garden, in the kitchen, assisting in day-to-day operations of our yoga retreat, and gaining professional experience by helping to coordinate our annual summer yoga festival. All sincere seekers of truth with a desire to live and serve with love in their hearts are encouraged to apply.

Founded in 1970 by Yogacharya Oliver Black, at the behest of his guru, Paramahansa Yogananda (best known for writing Autobiography of a Yogi). Since that time we have welcomed “all truth thirsty souls” to gather together on this sacred property for immersion in a balanced yogic lifestyle that includes meditation, devotion, and work performed in a spirit of selfless service. As such, we offer year-round work-exchange positions, and open our doors for groups and individuals to come experience spiritual relaxation and refreshment any time of year. Additionally, we are pleased to announce the incredible opportunity of a two-month yoga integration through our Karma Yogi Summer Internship and Work Exchange program! The program begins June 1st and goes through July 30th.

Besides our standard work exchange opportunities we are looking for an inspired group of Karma Yogis to join us in June in July for a more integrated Sadhana (meaning spiritual practice) program. On top of our standard room and board, and meditations, Karma Yogis will receive loving spiritual guidance rooted in the universal yoga teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda. This program will include guided meditation, yoga classes, spiritual study, devotional music, and opportunities to talk openly with the nurturing staff members who are here to help you understand and experience your own inner truths, providing you with spiritual tools necessary to expedite your own inner growth.

We honor and adhere to the deeper dimensions of Yoga— a Sanskrit word that can be translated as “Union.” Each of us in our own way is on a path to discover what this means through our own direct experience. All applicants should understand that we have no fixed belief requirements. We are however looking for people with a desire to discover a deeper meaning to life and a willingness/openness to spiritual self discovery. For this is the heart and mission of our yoga retreat.

Beyond this program of spiritual practice, it is important to understand that you will be living in community - which means shared values and responsibilities while living in close quarters. We work together, practice together, eat together, and laugh together; with many of us sharing a communal living space. Living in community in this way can be extremely rewarding and uplifting, but it can also have its challenges for those who are accustomed to unlimited free time and space. That said, you will be allotted a reasonable amount of free time— including two days off a week—to enjoy the 800 acres of retreat grounds, and the Pigeon River State Forest surrounding it. It is an immersion into nature, as well as spirit.

Our work exchange volunteers have opportunities to emphasize in particular areas. We will consider your skill set, constitution and wishes, and compare those qualities and desires with the overall demands of the retreat; attempting to come to a harmonious arrangement which works for all involved.

Our primary areas of emphasis are in the organic garden, helping in the kitchen, with retreat operations and with putting together a yoga festival that will be held the last weekend in July.

We look forward to sharing this incredible space with a few heartfelt lovers of truth and nature who desire an authentic experience of Yoga.
