Accepting Helpers for 2019 season!

Our farm is a 200-acre homestead in rural western Pennsylvania, set among rolling hills and vast forests. Established in 1976, the farm has had a long-standing history of sustainability. For many years our family lived without electricity or telephone service, and we raised all of our own organic produce and livestock.

We continue to grow vegetables in a large organic garden, maintain a small orchard, and raise organic free-range lamb and free-range chickens. In the springtime we are busy maple-sugaring and assisting our flock of sheep through lambing season. In the summer months we are busy gardening, landscaping, and rotationally-grazing our livestock. Harvesting and stocking up for winter is the focus in the autumn, and the winter hours are filled with animal husbandry, timber-stand improvement projects, and preparations for spring. From time to time we may also be involved in soap making and collection of wild mushrooms and berries.

The farm is a great place to learn how to grow, harvest, and prepare organic produce and live a more sustainable lifestyle. Helpers are active participants in the management of our livestock including the sheep and chickens.

We host helpers year-round and exchange free room and board for assistance on the farm. It is generally preferred that helpers stay for an extended period (at least 2 weeks), so you can settle into farm life. Western Pennsylvania is a lovely place to live, and helpers can enjoy the beautiful environment by hiking, biking, bird watching, etc. Although the area is remote, we are only an hour away from the city of Pittsburgh which provides myriad cultural activities.
