We are a couple (age 38 and 33) with a newborn son and a dog, we run a 20ha farm located at the gates of Florence, where we produce olive oil. We are certified organic and are developing our farm following the principles of permaculture. We have started this project not long ago and are recovering the land and most of the olive trees which have been abandoned for many many years.
Our main objective is to maintain the olive trees which are currently in production and restore the ones which have been abandoned. We also want to expand the farm activities to produce wine, soap, vegetables, fruits...
We are an eco-friendly farm, almost 100% off grid: the main house is built in wood, energy class A+, we recover most of the rain water off our roofs, we use a well for water, we have solar panels for electric energy, we recycle and are aiming to produce very little to no waste.
There are many things to do on the farm both ongoing and new projects, for example working with the olive trees, building compost piles, building and maintaining vegetable gardens, making firewood, building a shed, building a greenhouse, building animal shelter, building an outdoor kitchen and recreational space, restoring an old outbuilding... and much more.
We are also developing the land and are building a hospitality section so there will be lots of time dedicated to planning and building geodomes and huts and yurts, as well as compost toilets and creative bathrooms integrated in nature.
We work on the projects continuously except for the month of November when all of our energies are focused on olive harvest and olive oil making.
There are many opportunities to learn about building a permaculture farm, and endless projects to tackle. We love cooking and making food for many people and in the summertime we hope to organize big barbecue lunches open to the public.
The farm is located at the end of a 1km dirt road which passes through all the property.
We are very close to Florence’s city center (only 9 km) and 25 minutes on the bus from Santa Maria Novella Florence’s main train station. To get to the bus stop it's a 1.5km/15minute walk downhill from the farm, the bus departs every 15 minutes for Santa Maria Novella train station/city center. You can borrow bicycles, and we can offer to pick you up from the bus stop at the bottom of the hill every once in a while.
Florence is a beautiful international city, and we are very lucky to be located so close to it: you can see the Duomo’s dome (emblem of the city) from the farm’s hills. If you like excursions you can also easily access most of the Chianti, Siena, San Gimignano and other beautiful places in Tuscany.
You will be living in a brand new wooden house (next door to where we live), and you will be sharing a bedroom and a bathroom with 1 more person. Everything is brand new. A small kitchenette is at your disposal for cooking, we have wi-fi throughout our home, mosquito screens on all windows, heating in the winter.
The food is mainly vegetarian and will be provided by us daily. We will share at least 1 meal per day, typically dinner, and you should expect to cook the remaining part of your meals in your kitchenette. We ask you to keep your living space and kitchenette clean.
For the shared meal, when we are home we are always available to eat together, if we are not home we will provide you with food to cook.
If you are interested please write the word "sage" in the subject line of your contact email, as we will only be looking at emails containing this keyword, need to filter all those auto-applications ;-). In your application please also specify if you have any skills you’re good at or ones that you’d like to develop, and if you have any food intolerances or allergies. It’s very important to specify the first available start date and the maximum time you think you can spend on our farm.
We look forward to sharing the farm life, exchanging opinions and learning from one another while working together to create something functional and beautiful.
We can accept maximum 2 volunteers for a period of time of minimum 1 month.
There is a no smoking policy within our home and any place indoors, if you do smoke outside we ask you to please be conscious about the cigarette butt disposal and keeping ashtrays clean.
Other than Italian, we speak fluent English, French and Spanish.
We are really excited to meet you and look forward to sharing our home, experience and lifestyle and can’t wait to learn some new skills and knowledge from you!
