Yosemite homestead needs some tender, loving care and help with raised bed gardens, resident pets and livestock in the Sierra Nevada foothills in Mariposa, California. Quiet ranch-ette with beautiful views, privacy yet close to cute gold rush town. In hot summer months, mid-June, July and August, host requests visitors who are experts in video editing, social media and/or book editing. Winter months are used preparing raised beds, compost piles, preparing fire breaks and other fire protections. Use the private living quarters and in exchange do pet sitting and chores. Choose from 2 options, private room in house with attached bath or private separate quarters in converted RV. Homeowner is looking for a short or longterm candidate who can house/farm sit during owner’s brief business trips and help on large projects. Meals provided on work days. Short term candidates will also be considered. (Most photos are taken at my house but more of the spectacular shots of Half Dome and waterfalls are inside Yosemite. )

Homeowner with an online career desires assistance with raised bed gardening, pet sitting, ranch maintenance, yard work and animal care – 1 horse, 7pigs, 2 goats, 2 rabbits and multiple chickens, peacocks, dogs and cats on a 6 acre parcel in the Sierra Nevada foothills during the year with the exception of June, July and August. Temps are too hot to focus on exterior projects and we focus on interior projects then.

If you are interested in living in California and would like lodging in exchange for farm sitting and help with occasional chores, you would be welcome for a long term gig. You can use this place as a base and obtain part time work in our area, explore California and nearby Yosemite. Meals are provided on work days for big projects. PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR INTENDED TRAVEL TIMING WHEN YOU MESSAGE ME.

All projects support our goals:

1. Provide a harmonious, safe environment for all animals and humans in my care

2. Providing food to household and animals

3. Protecting household and animals from fire threat

Just as important, what are your goals? Tell us about them, and about your interests and aspirations. What skills and knowledge do you need for your best future?

Homeowner also is in need of anyone with video editing skills.

I am surrounded by larger ranches there are ample trails to walk on with the dogs as well as close proximity to Yosemite National Park. Homeowner travels approximately 1 trip/month and needs farm sitting in absence. Moderate chores and/or projects need tending to during the week. I am happy to be flexible with your timing so you can see the park. My day begins with the animals at 7:30for about an hour and then again in the late afternoon for about an hour. On big work days, when I can help projects will start following breakfast. Otherwise you can plan your time independently. I would like assistance, with morning/evening chores. If you prefer to focus on a big project instead we can discuss. These include help with fire prevention, wood piles, brush piles and burning, tending raised bed garden, compost pile, general weeding, gathering eggs, feeding pigs, maintaining wallow, gathering wood and kindling, and other chores as needed.

I have thought about some projects I would like help with this winter:
An orchard
Creation of an outdoor Woodburning sauna
Fence repair
Preparation of garden for next season with compost etc
Build extra raised bed gardens
Build rock wall - I have tons of rocks and masonry work here is very desired
Creation of additional water holding systems and tanks
Fire prevention and brush clearing
Removal of invasive weeds
mowing lawn
Cleaning animal sheds
Seasonal preparation for garden, animals
General organization of sheds and household, as needed
weeding of garden and pruning for growing season
fertilizing all plants and trees
I do occasionally slaughter some of my animals for food. I do not expect any woofers to participate in this unless they choose to. This happens approximately 2x/year.

What I would like is an exchange of ideas and discussion. I will treat you as a guest and expect you to behave as such. Meals will be provided on work days otherwise you will be on your own. If I am preparing meals, I will include you or invite you to participate and I expect the reciprocal.

I will also require background and emergency contact info. Interested candidates can message me to receive a copy of our simple application. Your Wwoof profile must be live and active during your stay, My household is harmonious and available to all people of any background. I do not tolerate racism or prejudice and believe that all people are equally deserving of respect, kindness and courtesy. I hope that those who choose me as a host will share these values.

Homeowner speaks English and French and is active with local french club, garden group, symphony and an avid organic gardener and loves to cook. Homeowner has vast knowledge of local area and Yosemite National park and its history. the town is a cute old fashioned gold rush town with an interesting community and a small town, can-do feel. Several great local restaurants, a terrific health food store and cafe and other attractions make our community a desirable destination for tourists and retirees alike. Many young professionals live here who are involved in science, biology and botany. They work in Yosemite National Park or in nearby University of Merced creating an interesting dialogue in our community. This area is a special place for any photographers, amateur or professional.

The Sierra Nevada foothills offer a unique region of wildflowers and native plants. It is one of 3 regions worldwide that have the largest quantity of endemic species and is a destination for scientists, geologists and botanists. The higher elevations have incredible vistas with pristine alpine lakes. In nearby towns along the 49’er historic gold rush trail, there are ghosts towns, former mines, historic institutions and attractions. Yosemite National Park and near by Kings Canyon park have incredible stands of sequoia trees that are as much as 30ft in diameter. This area is perfect for those who enjoy hiking or any outdoor activity. Nearby Merced river is one of the most beautiful wild and scenic byways and has class 4 rapids during the spring season. Swimming in the river is enjoyable in the summer months. There is some available transport and it would be advised for guests to have their own vehicles although home owner does have use of a vehicle for the right person. This area is 3 hours due east of San Francisco and areas near the coast.

The local town is an old fashioned “Gold Rush town” full of history and wonderful sights, boutiques, restaurants and a terrific yoga studio. We have a great library where one can borrow books, dvd’s etc. The YARTS bus transportation system is a private bus that offers transportation into Yosemite National park for a reasonable fee. Your destination is Mariposa, California.

The town is quite small but there is a lot going on with local music festivals, agri-nature events, wildflower hikes and other nature activities.

THERE IS LIMITED PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN OUR AREA and while it is possible to arrive and depart using public transport it can pose logistical challenges. There is excellent bus service via YARTS transportation in/out of the park from downtown Mariposa.
Please keep this in mind.
